I just thought of an interesting, full on TT for Carlisle. Steam Era 1950's? Loco Changes galore and plenty of freight/passenger traffic. The only problem would be the Shap Bankers due to track changes but im sure someone could work that out. I would do it myself but I dont have the Info nor the experience/time. Though it's a good idea, I don't think it's possible because of the amount of change that's taken place in the last 60 years: The Hincaster, Clapham Junction, Kirby Stephen, Eden Valley and Keswick branches have been lifted, and the Windermere branch has been reduced to a long siding. 11 stations between Carlisle and Carnforth have been closed, and I suspect that there were a lot more sidings and loops along the line than there are now.

the closest i have attempted is a 1973 timetable, for the period when the PSB was commissioned, but before the knitting was live (i had the SWB WTTs and loads book for this year), so everything is paraffin can worked. however.....trains are wildly out of time, partly due to the way SimSig handles gradients, and partly becuase the speed limits are completely different. hence i have suspended this TT until such a time (should it ever happen) that a 1970s era becomes available. A poor substitute could be the various steam specials that visit Carlisle. Quite often they run up Shap and back via the S&C. Some time ago there were also some (steam) driver training runs to and from Appleby. Both of these would need e.c.s. and l.e. moves, as well as the main trains. Log in to reply |

That's all well & good, but one slight problem in that there is no 'steam' category on the traction types within the 'Train type' sphere of creating trains in the timetable data. When I wrote the 1979-1980 Carlisle timetable there were a number of 'steam' hauled trains with associated ECS & LD movements with support coaches in the 'Special Traffic Notices' I used which ran as you say. But until such time a 'steam' traction code is added I chose not to include them. I know some people say you can use diesel, but to me that just isn't accurate enough. You go to an awful lot of trouble to make the timetable as accurate as possible subject to the official BR publications at the time & yet some expect you to 'fudge' it just to add in some addtitional traffic. To me if you go down that road you might just as well make the timetable up as you go along & thats not something I want to do. Maybe at some point in the future 'steam' traction will be added.

Well I notice it on an 'F2' screen. That's because I spend most of my time these days writing timetables for sims as opposed to playing sims. The only time I play sims is when I'm testing the timetable & it's certainly something I notice, probably because I'm looking to make sure everything is as it should be. I wasn't too happy having to use a passenger acceleration rate for double headed freightliners on the Carlisle sim, but it was the only way to get round the problem of trains worked by pairs of electric losing so much speed. I'm sure in the future these sorts of things will be added, but for me I don't really want to see 'diesel' when the train is supposed to be 'steam' even on an 'F2' screen. The timetable I'm currently writing as we speak has 'steam' charters running over parts of it, but I won't be adding them in until the 'steam' category has been created. When I'm playing a sim or testing a timetable I tend to picture the train in my mind & yet monitoring its performance as it progesses along its line of route on an 'F2' screen I just find it off-putting when it says 'diesel', but I know its supposed to be 'steam'.
