Hello All. I am posting today to ask about a child advance ticket I have purchased from Clunderwen to London Paddington on Saturday the 20th April. A recent change of plan has meant that I will be staying in Llanelli the night before. Therefore, I will have to get on the train at Llanelli. Is this allowed? Many thanks, Eden

 Will a new ticket need to be bought? Or do guards ever turn a blind eye, seeing as I have paid for a longer journey than I will now be taking?

Depending on the connection times, the cost of the new ticket you'd need to buy and how important your time is, you could of course set off early and travel from Llanelli to Clunderwen to start your journey at the beginning of the ticket you already have. It's quite a diversion though, and with the low service frequency it might not even be possible (e.g. if you're travelling early in the day).

Unfortunately not possible..... Would have to leave around 00:00 and wait 3 hours at Carmarthen. I'll just have to bite the bullet! Never mind, it is my mistake buying without being 100% sure of plans. Many thanks for your help. Log in to reply |

Looking at the timetable it seems that all the trains from Clunderwen stop at LLanelli so if llanelli has open platforms then as long as you get on the correct train I'd think you'd be OK as it'd require the TI to have a bizarre argument with you about proving whether you got on the correct train at the wrong station - my guess is that in the unlikely event he was aware of the fact he'd not be bothered arguing the matter. Thankyou Peter!!! I didn't think of that. I thought I would have to be spending £20-30 on another ticket all the way to London, when actually, it would come to £2.60 to get to Swansea. Well, that certainly alleviates all worry now! B) Eden Log in to reply |

Best advice is to a) buy a new ticket, or b) see if you can pay the £10 admin fee to amend it. You would be charged (at best) to a standard fare to your destination, your advance will be void. However you will also be at risk of being reported and prosecuted for fare evasion, fines of up to £1000 and a criminal record. You won't actually need to buy an extra ticket. I presume the train your taking from Llanelli would of been the same train from Clunderwen? As the ticket is routed FGW & Connections your taking a connecting train to meet the FGW part of the journey, hence you. Just see the conductor as soon as you board the train at Llanelli and explain your situation. Theres a 1% chance that you'll need to buy a ticket, alot of conductors prefer the honesty. But it IS limited to a particular station pair - and according to the rules I posted earlier, boarding at a different station is not allowed on that particular type of ticket. You are right, it is the station pair. I'm not sure how lenient Arriva Trains Wales are.

I will go to the guard at the start of the journey then, I feel that ATW are fairly good with understanding situations like this. I have had a ticket from Johnston to Clarbeston Road before but needed to get off at Clunderwen. I asked the guard for a single between Clarbeston and Clunderwen but he said not to bother with buying the extra fare. I suppose it depends on the guard on the train at the time. If the guard does not accept the ticket, can I just buy a single to Swansea? Or would it be a fine? Eden Log in to reply |
