Hi all while im playing SimSig whenever i get a SF i find it hard to find out what signal has failed andwhich aspects have failed as this is all it says on incident control panel is something like this; 00:00:01 signal failure detected in the wotton bassett jn area why cant it be something like this?; 00:00:01 signal 45 has its red and yellow aspects failed. I presume it's because that's the style of message given in real life.

I would say that most of the time its easy to discover which signal has failed, and if its a large area, say Saltley it might be harder to find if it specified a signal number, and you might get distracted trying to find it.

At March East where I work we have a several Signal Alarms. Each Alarm applies to several signals and if there is a "first filament failure" for example the alarm will sound and it can be cancelled by a switch. When the signal concerned changes to another aspect the alarm will sound once more to indicate there is no longer a first filament failure which can be cancelled by the switch which is moved back to the "normal" position. However to determine which aspect of which signal has a first filament failure requires observing the passage of trains through the affected area and waiting for the alarm to sound. There is also a flashing red light to indicate which alarm is ringing.If a signal,s red aspect fails completely, a "black" (blank) signal, then the indication for that signal in the signalbox also goes out and the first stop signal in rear of it will stay at red. March East is a Lever Signalbox and a different arrangement probably applies in a Panel Signalbox.

Croes Newydd North Fork has a set of five "filament failure" lights, as well as a cancel button, however only three out of the five narrow the failure down to a specific signal, the other two narrow it down between groups of two or three signals respectively.

Pretty sure Exeter West's Up Homes bracket is all on one alarm - that would be a fun total of 8 lamps which could have failed (assuming the distants are only indicated to Middle box).

When the S&T rewired Agecroft Jcn, all of the Seimens indicators were 'out'; either the wrong voltage or wrong bulbs! Just like when the DMU's had bulbs instead of tail-lamps; couldn't tell if the trains were complete. No signalman sent 4-5 or 9 though; this was the begining of the riddance of class 9's and catch-points too. Log in to reply |
