and: The first railway to use colour-light signals?
and another: At this station, the trains go West and East although they are heading North and South and, the trains go North and South although they are heading East and West?
The platforms, at this UK station, point North and South as well as West and East. The N and S platforms lead to trains going E and W; the W and E platforms lead to trains going N and S.
One person has got an answer, sofar.

I have a question if I may:

Can you name stations in the UK that are operated by a TOC even though none of their services use that station?

I'll get the ball rolling: Burton-upon-Trent. Owned by EMT but only served by XC
DO the Network Rail owned/managed stations count, as NR is not a TOC :p
WELL if you want to be technical, NR do operate some trains (mainly maintenance) so...I dunno depends how pedantic you want to be!
Network Rail have Man Picc and and the dispatchers are Northern Rail, Virgin and the Carlisle Group.

And just remind me, since when where Network Rail a TOC, or for that matter Carlisle group?

…Does this happen anywhere else, for example what do Waterloo-Waterloo trains display on the board at London?…
Although they don’t run any more, the announcements for the morning London Bridge-London Bridge via Crystal Palace services used to say: “Calling at: New Cross Gate, … Queen’s Road Peckham, South Bermondsey, and <BLANK>”, with just the ‘London Bridge’ part of the announcement cut off. The screens always used to display the destination as ‘London Bridge’, however.

I think in the clock-wise direction trains are displayed as Strawberry Hill.

Not sure about anti-clock, though.

Network Rail don't operate any trains. Engineering trains, track recording trains and similar creations are operated by various FOCs with Network Rail as the customer.

I believe that the NMT and various other yellow liveried trains are operated by DRS when needed, but I could be wrong

I assume that only relates to the Peds, 97s and the banana (Ie Fully Yellow owned), not to the DRS 37 worked test trains, or officers specials?

I don't know, to be honest! I thought DBS had the bulk of the work. The main point is that Network Rail don't (and can't) run any themselves!

Indeed, NR is forbidden from directly operating any train by the terms of its Network Licence.

Just a quick one

Routes on which more than 1 TOC can be used to go from 1 station to the next (must follow the same line)

I'll start it off

Sheffield - Manchester (Via hope valley) served by EMT, FTPE and Northern
Derby - Sheffield served by EMT, XC and 1 Northern Service
Derby - Nottingham served by EMT and XC

I could go on but I'll let you name a few

Some of them fail the "next station" test.

What I meant by next station was from station a to station b using the same route

On that basis -

Glasgow Central and London Euston (Virgin and ScotRail)
Fort William and Mallaig (ScotRail and West Coast Railway Co)
Grosmont and Whitby (Northern and West Coast Railway Co/NYMR)

That does not seem to be as testing as between adjacent stations with different TOCS.

Manchester Piccadilly- Manchester Oxford Road (Northern, TransPennine, East Midlands, Arriva Trains Wales).

If we're allowing A to B on same route with no intermediate stop:

Manchester Piccadilly- Stockport (Cross Country, TransPennine, East Midlands, Arriva Trains Wales, Virgin Trains, Northern)

New Cross Gate-Crystal Palace or West Croydon (Southern and London Overground)
Redhill-Reigate (Southern and First Great Western)
Clapham Junction-Shepherd’s Bush (Southern and London Overground)
Leighton Buzzard-Milton Keynes Central (Southern and London Midland) – No doubt there are other short segments along this stretch too where adjacent stations are called at by two different operators.
Ebbsfleet International-Ashford International (Eurostar and Southeastern).
Habrough-Barnetby (East Midlands Trains, First TransPennine Express and Northern (on Saturdays)).
