As someone currently at uni in Portsmouth I got to say the track layout is perfect with a mixture of express and local passenger services (not sure about freight; I have never seen any anywhere in this area at all in the year I've been here oddly enough). It can serve as a excellent starter region plus its small enough to have one person to manage.

I'd have to agree with this one, I'd love to play a Portsmouth sim

Pompey has never been a big freight area. Most of the freight in that area is at Eastleigh or Southampton

Only freight would be the odd Engineers trains for possessions.

Even so, it will be a great area

How would we go about getting the wheels moving on this project?

You'd need to find a willing developer who has no current projects going on at the moment, as well as being able to fit developing a sim around their personal life. Add to that the need for a lot of data (e.g Track Circuit lengths, detailed Signal Diagrams, Overlaps etc). Whilst a lot of people would like to see Sims for many areas of the country, it will be a case of being patient and waiting.

Of course, you could always create a Mock Up of the Portsmouth area using a program such as Notepad/Paint and the "SIMSIG V2" font.

Portsmouth area comes under Havant ASC. A sim covering most - if not all - of Havant ASC would certainly be fun.

Doesn't that Banana train still go from Fratton? Saw it a few years ago.

Ceased after three months, having run very irregularly in that time.

As a general rule, it's the lack of data that's the biggest problem. Find the data, and we can probably (eventually) find a developer for it.

These may be fun for people, but have no effect on sim development.

any idea where you could find that sort of information. I am a Fratton driver so know the area well but wouldn't know techincal details?

The relevant S&T Department's office (or whatever they call S&T these days!).

National Records Group hold the controlled copies. However, getting a "library card" for them is like finding rocking horse dung. Back to S&T - signalboxes often have a wealth of information, sometimes buried.

Sometimes the information for one area is held up the line at a different signal box!

I do have experience from the portsmouth area;
1. I work for southwest trains and go up the pompey direct
2. I grew up in portsmouth.

Also there is a rubbish sim site called PC rail who have simulated Portsmouth but to download portsmouth the're charging £32 for it and it has no level crossings, and the platform numbers at havant are the wrong way round.
Also if a portsmouth sim is released, please do it with a platform 2 option at portsmouth harbour?

jwsetford. Im not starting an arguement, but the PC-rail sim is very good, however having learnt from past events its comments like that start arguements and cause threads to be locked....
As I say im trying to Start one im trying to AVOID one

As you say, probably best not to get sucked into that debate, everyone will have a view but here's probably not the place to express it.

I suppose you could merge boxes like other simulations (Humberside for instance) and include Haslemere (EW) and the other one, is WZ Farncombe? It could be added as separate boxes and chainable, like Lancing and Brighton, however depends if there is much to do on each one.

I think there are a couple of freight trains using the Portsmouth line...4Y80 04:41 Thamesport-Southampton MCT and 6Y32 08:24 Fawley-Holybourne.

4Y80 will never run. A container train will hit some bridges along the portsmouth direct

Which is why most freight is either at Eastleigh or Southampton I'd guess.
