Hello all,

Unsure whether this should be in here or rail oriented but in a way it is signalling related.

Anyway, whilst making the 2005 Brighton TT, I've noticed from the workbook that any ECS move from the West Coastway route to Lovers Walk always run via Hove and Preston Park, from platforms 1, 2 and 3. I've always wondered why this is the case, especially if booked from platform 2 as you can run direct via the carriage road.

I've also noticed any starting from platform 2 will run from the depot via Preston Park and Hove rather than leaving from the carriage road. I've noticed there are no workings at all from this line.

Is the link no longer there or is it not a signaled move anymore?

I'm not certain that this is the reason, but this diagram of Lovers Walk shows that the only direct access to the sidings and carriage shed is from the Preston Park direction.

It would appear far more convenient to reverse via Preston Park loop and allow the ECS a clear run into the shed rather than have the driver change ends within the depot getting in the way of everything and bringing the complex to a standstill.

purely a supposition, but could it also be to maintain route knowledge from hove to preston park for drivers who would otherwise not use that side of the triangle, as only the victoria - Bognor/littlehampton services use it?

therefore if the main lines between preston park/Hove and brighton are blocked, drivers can sign the "diversion".

John, that's why in the original post I said trains from platform 2 to the depot, which is the only direct access to the south part of the depot. Although going round the triangle means changing ends twice, entering from the south end would mean only changing ends once and would also be in the right direction for going through the CWM.

JC92, however I didn't think of that, obviously if that is actually the reason. I guess it depends how many were on the roster on the Southampton and Littlehampton/Bognor Regis services, which were every hour for each one making a half hourly service on the west side of the triangle. Unsure if it was the same crew as the lot who do the Brighton's too.

I originally thought it may be to turn the set's around, however if it worked an empty to Brighton to work a Westcoastway service the next day, it would be turned back again anyway going via Preston Park and Hove.

John,

Many thanks for posting the signalling diagram of Lovers Walk depot. I've a couple of questions for you...

(i) What's happened to the No5 road in the main carriage shed ?

(ii) Why do some of the shunt signals (eg all those permitting access INTO the main carriage shed) have reversed stop aspects (ie white on left and red on right) ? Is that how they actually are on the ground and if so why ?

Regards,

Javelin

Added - just noticed ALL shunts which are upsidedown (when page is in portrait orientation) have reversed stop aspects so guess it is an artefact.

(i) According to the panel operator, (and confirmed in this article when the shed was modernised between 2002 and 2006 ready for the introduction of the 377's, 5 road was removed to provide wider walkways.

(ii) It's just a mistake on the diagram. On the ground the red aspects are indeed on the left hand side.
