Why isn't ground signal 705 white? 13/07/2013 at 12:24 #47080

6B15 is stopped at signal #705, facing Up (i.e., left) after having reversed direction at Salisbury Spur. A route has been set for it from signal #705 to Down Yard 1-5 (and also from #701 to 705).

Even when 6B15 begins to move, the shunt signal stays red. Why is this? If 701 is approach-controlled, I would have expected it to change to white as soon as the train approaches it.

Presumably it is to control the trains speed, but I'm not sure why 705 is approach released when 703 isn't.

In my experience #705 doesn't appear to release when a train approaches or passes it.

705 does release from red. Perhaps you're always elsewhere on the panel when it clears?

Thanks Steamer - I'll look more carefully!

(Added) You're right - it does clear. Apologies. Must be approach-controlled (unusual for a ground signal?)

(this is a different train from earlier example)

703 isn't as the approach release is handled by 407.
