Liverpool Street, City of London

The Bouncy Castle? Or the Met Rly box at the west end of the Outer Rail platform? The latter looks surprisingly good but is in need of some tlc. It would be good to find a use for it whereby any surviving equipment could be retained. The former isn't the most signalbox-like box but I suppose it is rather unique!

Note the caveat within the article:

"English Heritage said some of the listed buildings could be "rejuvenated" as cafes or museums, such as the 1923 signal box in Totnes, Devon.".

Looks like the bricks and mortar have a measure of protection but the interesting bits seem to be more at risk.

Out of use signal boxes abandoned on the railway tend to be stripped of equipment and then rot away. I know of a couple of places where the equipment was left in situ but still deteriorated in condition.

I personally like to see the whole thing retained, but would also choose to retain the building over nothing every time.

And in the vast majority, about the only original equipment will be the frame - and even that is likely to have been completely redone "downstairs".

Based on our experience with Horsted Keynes SB (which is listed Grade II) the listing only applies to the external features of the architecture. The signalling equipment is therefore not protected. Danny is quite right inasmuch as the frame at HK is the original 1882 Saxby & Farmer, (with a later 7 lever extension) but all the locking has been revamped more than once.

Eastbourne, East Sussex.
It's good to see my local signalbox make it to the list. A many happy days spent there in my youth, when i was a working lever frame box. Then going on to be working with it when I progressed to full employment, back in the the days of the double arrow. :-)

Well I've just come back from a few days "at home" in Broughty Ferry and they have "preserved" the old signal box in the middle of the Up platform. It was demolished a few years ago and stored but now reserected as part of a Restaurant (vacant).

As you can see it's not exactly the same box though.

There is a lever frame of sorts visible through the platform level door (the levers were on the upper level when in operation). So its not really clear what they have preserved and what they have made up.

The frame in the Ferry is the one from upstairs, but has been reassembled (by the firm who built the box) with the levers transposed, so number 1 is on the right as you look at it. It's also been set into concrete. The contracters simply burned the footbridge, which given the whole station including box and footbridge are category A listed, is verging on criminal. What a waste!

I meant to add that the box is almost entirely new; new wooden cladding on a new steel frame, with new windows and a new door. About the only original thing I can see on it is the name board.

Even listing is no guarantee of protection for the structure if it gets into the wrong hands: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-21955502

I'm gobsmacked that Shrewsbury box isn't listed as it's the biggest box still working and has been the biggest still working for quite a few years!

Severn Bridge Jn SB is already listed. This website shows it to have been listed on 23 January 1991:-
