I'm currently trying to retrieve some .WTT and .WTR files from a sim folder (pre Loader) but can't find the "show compatibility files" button anywhere due to the "progess" Microsoft have made with windows (ie hide everything in a very unhelpful pane.)

can anyone advise where the option is please?

cheers

They're probably in the virtual store somewhere, assuming you attempted to write to Program Files

Windows 8 is really no different than 7, in fact it is 6.2, 7 being 6.1 and Vista 6.0.0. Click on the Desktop metro icon and that will put you at the normal Desktop. from there you can right click and add all the icons that you have missed, one being the lovely control panel. From there, you are back in control! If you want the start menu back, download and install Classic Shell 3.6.8; you'll have then, the nice Start Menu of XP and Vista, not the rubbish of 7 and 8!
If you want the quick-launch back, then right click your: taskbar/toolbar/new toolbar/ add this: %SystemDrive%\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Frankly I've never heard of the "view compatibility files" until you mentioned it. In Windows 7 if I attempt to write to %ProgramFiles% I will always need to grant Administrator rights to do that, and without that will result in E_ACCESS_DENIED, so I've never actually used the virtual store if there is one.

Perhaps it's simply that you are using a 64-bit Windows 8 that you need to browse "C:\Program Files (x86)\SimSig" instead of "C:\Program Files\SimSig"?
