It's been mentioned on other threads recently that there is a segment of SimSig players who never play multi-player, for whatever reason, and just like to single-play sims on their laptop or whatever. This is a plea to developers of scrolly sims to consider this segment of the userbase.

Scrolly sims which scroll in one direction are playable on a standard 17" widescreen laptop (1440x900 resolution) through use of a mouse with a scroll button, but there are many which in this configuration would require scrolling in two dimensions, which I find (and I would expect others find) practically impossible.

So please, if you're developing a new sim, try to keep the important bits of the screen within the parameters of a 1440x900 resolution screen on either the vertical or horizontal axis.

Those of us still on 1280 x 800 (or even 1024 x 768) might think you were not being totally inclusive with your suggestion.

However, I do have the same misgivings to an even greater extent working on my smaller screen and there is at least 1 sim I have never played because I can't face the hassle of scrolling up and down as well as from side to side.

How about those of us who have 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 screens that get frustrated about sims that are on two lines when they'd be much better on one (think WembleySub).

Looking at the latest Steam platform survey shows that 31.74% of people have 1920x1080, 1440x900 is at 6.52%, strangely enough 1366x768 accounts for 21.38% of screens (probably people using cheap 'HD' televisions as monitors).

I would prefer that simulation developers stick to either 1080 height, or 720 height, given they are the standard HD resolutions.

Could some of the 1366 x 768 be tablet users? If Wikipedia is right a lot of 10" and 11" tablets run at that resolution.

most scrolly sims, the scroll down, moves to the right and the scroll up moves to the left, if you press the shift key it reverses the scroll back to normal.
and for reference, my laptop screen is 1366 by 768. That is quite a common laptop screen size.

1440x900 was popular for a few laptops a couple of years back, but 1366x768 is all I've seen for a while not - possibly if for no other reason than it can fit 1024x768 neatly inside of it!

The sims are built in cells and, for example, the pages versions as 128x48 cells. I try and work to 48 high on scrolly but sometimes it's just not practicable if you want to reproduce the panel layout a close as possible but then it should not be more than 1 or 2 extra cells. I don't know what the equates to in screen sizes. I find scrolling down a bit of a hassle too, so try and avoid it.

Someone's now bound to now contradict me on one of my Sims specifications.

While I hear what you are saying, I can honestly say I try and build sims to be as small as I can make them while retaining certain visual guidelines. However, sometimes the layouts being simulated are such that it's difficult to make it fit vertically on one screen as you request. I am pretty sure that's the same approach the other developers use too.

As an example, my laptop has a 17" screen and I would love for South Humberside to fit on it....but it doesn't and I have to scroll down and bear in mind, I developed it so I could change it if I wanted!!! South Humberside actually started as a paged sim originally and it was really, REALLY confusing with track joins over pages all over the place. It was an absolute nightmare. Being a scrolly, allowed me to clean it up no end. That said, the testers and I still went through many iterations of layouts at Immingham, Scunthorpe and West Burton till we settled on the layout you see today as we thought it was the best compromise of everything we tried.

Of course, the ultimate answer to all this is to make the sims zoomable/resizeable, so they fit to whatever size you have available. But that's more than a simple rewrite ;)

As for actual screen resolutions:
1) I appreciate my 1440x900 isn't the optimum
2) Using a steam survey for screen resolution percentages is misleading as a large percentage of steam usage are proper "gamers" with a game rig rather than a laptop

Finally, great tip y10g9 on using shift+scroll for vertical scrolling. That actually does reduce the "problem".

The Shift and Scroll option has been available for quite a while. It was one of the early issues that we came across in fact with scrolly sims.

That said, it's not one of those features that's immediately obvious. I imagine its in the manual somewhere though I can't say, like many others I imagine, I've read it to know for certain.

That said, I just took a look and it's there (Here in fact - See the first paragraph) though I admit its buried in the text and easily missed.

Maybe the wiki needs a keys/mouse controls page with all the generic functions listed. Anyone fancy doing some Wiki editing????

Edit: Updated the link to the right page....told you it was buried!!!
