I can't say I have used SimSig right from the very beginning, but I do go back to the days of Swindon, Southampton and Stafford and have greatly enjoyed the experience. I can even remember having to pay for those early sims. The it was announced that in future all existing and future sims would be free as a contract had been won with BR/Railtrack to develop and test the real thing and that we were reaping the result. Over the years SimSig became a real hobbyist self help group. If something went wrong we were told that people were doing all of this in their free time for nothing. I enjoy playing the old sims (and getting annoyed at them) and don't visit the site that often, mainly when I am updating or rebuilding my machine. I did this recently, visited the site and was pleased to see not only a new system but a new sim of Marylebone. But wait, I see that this is in a new category of 'Payware', then I see 'Shop' and look at the prices. Now I don't mind paying a fair price for a product (even if it was promised future items would be free) but £19.95 seems a bit steep too me, especially as the Scottish ones are much cheaper and Fenchurch St is only a fiver. I am always being accused of wasting money, but even I am having to think whether I really want to pay that sort of money, when I can almost get the same enjoyment from my old free sims David Log in to reply |

Obviously, you are entitled to your opinion and I'm not having a go at you for holding it. However, I compare what I paid for Marylebone with what I might spend on a day out. A pub lunch, car park charge, newspaper and a magazine, let's say. That's 20 quid for three or four hours fun. The same amount for Marylebone gives me hundreds of hours of pleasure and keeps my brain active. If charging reasonable amounts for some of the sims helps to ensure that SimSig can continue to produce the best in their field, then personally I'm totally ok with it. Like Mike I'm not at all saying that your opinion doesn't matter or having a moan because of it... All I would say is that a lot of the sims are still donationware and it is down to the developer whether or not new sims are donation or payware. I know Clive has mentioned many times that his sims in production and those being reworked for a re-release will be donationware. Fenchurch St is a much smaller simulation and (correct me if I'm wrong) but I don't think contains as many features as Marylebone. Marylebone you could say is three sims in one with the different era options some of which haven't been implemented (yet) in real life so it would seem right that Marylebone was more expensive. I won't name other sig simulations on the market but I think we all know which they are but if you look at how much they charge and also compare the difference in quality, the £20 for Marylebone looks cheap as chips. One correction on the above though: I stated that I was unable to dedicate any support to the sims as payware at the time and thus didn't feel it honest to charge for them - no such contract with BR/Railtrack existed or was mentioned. That was something like 9 years ago and, of course, things change in that time. I now spend a chunk of my working day on SimSig which means that (a) I can now provide that support; (b) my family doesn't want me to work for free!
