I'm unsure offhand whether OSX will allocate a link local ipv4 address, I know Windows does.

Otherwise you'll either need to have some kind of DHCP server (again, OSX might be able to do that), or to allocate IPs manually.

A direct cable between the two should be fine (assuming fairly recent hardware)

If it's a network/ethernet cable between two PCs then doesn't it need to be a crossover cable rather than the more common straight-through cable?

All Gigabit NICs are auto-sensing (it's part of the specification), the majority of 10/100 ones are also auto-sensing, I've not checked what sort of network cable I'm using in at least the last 5 years.

The railway industry is always years behind the leading edge - that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! I mean, 25-pin D-type serial ports are still very common!
