Good morning all. would like to know how I can get signal numbers on the panel for Exeter, and other sims ive downloaded any help would be great Thankyou Paul Log in to reply |

The only one where you can display numbers on the panel itself is Euston (optional tick box on start-up). However, there are pdf signal number plans available within each simulation's manual, with the exception of West Hampstead and Victoria (I plan to write one for these, but I'll need a few days!) Also, the one for King's Cross is out of date, but I'm working on a new one currently.

You can also see signal nos by a right click on the signal, provided that 'right click cancel route' is UNTICKED under Options (F3) > Control tab.

Plus on the new loader sims you can also use shift + right click and the signal number will be displayed.

One tip I can pass on with regards to signal numbers is if you've got a signal where you regularly receive calls from in a particular timetable (e.g.: Southampton; Signal 842 on the run-round line) then add a sticky by the signal with the signal number on it, colour the text of the sticky using one of the two grey colours (or as you please) and colour the background of the sticky black (or, again, as you please).... hey presto!

Although being able to display signal numbers on a panel might help, in practice this would clutter up the screen as SimSig appears to have only one font, so signal numbers would appear excessively large (look at Euston). Their only real use is to help in the creation of signal maps for printout. Besides, the astute signalman who really knows his territory would in theory know the location of the most important signals without needing to refer to a diagram. I've tried memorizing signal numbers and failed miserably. Maybe this is because I don't limit myself to one sim. I like the stickynotes idea but why reinvent the wheel? Displaying signal numbers is really a clumsy solution to the real problem: where is the train? Far more useful would be the ability for SimSig to zoom the View to center on any selected train or signal, just as happens in SoftRail's Train Dispatcher, which has been around since 2006. Is this feature available in real life in British signalling software? Apparently not. I find that a train's last position (using F2) is more useful than confirming a signal - you could waste a lot of time checking one signal after another and not finding the right one. To those who argue that real signallers don't need to jump to a train or signal, I say, make this a feature that can be toggled on or off: ON to help newcomers to a particular sim find their way around, and OFF for those diehards who thrive on the masochism of reality. On the Paged simulations, you could go MNU>Train Describer>Locate, and then type in the headcode you were trying to find, and the simulation would jump to the page the describer was on. Could this be implemented on the scrolly format?

Displaying Location Area for a particular signal is certainly an improvement - provided one knows where the area is in the sim! For a non-UK player unfamiliar with a large sim, it could take a great deal of precious time to locate the area. Jumping to the specified train in the View window would still be preferable, and absolves the developer of needing to give a location to every signal. I hope we will see this happen one day.
