Having been going through the various NR data feeds recently has shown me how common extra moves, such as Tampers, Engineers and extra LEs are, so it would be nice to throw in a few to spruce up timetables. However, I have absolutely no idea what headcodes these sort of moves run under!

Will they run as "Z"s, or be given suitable headcodes for their destination, or both? Pascal's list of LE headcodes on the wiki shows a mix of both being used in the Western/Midland regions (a more complete list would of course be nice, but that requires someone having the info...).

If running under Z headcodes, what digits are acceptable, as I know some are reserved? (I can't for the life of me find any of the lists I've seen before!)

What class do tampers and other on-track plant run as? Just a freight headcode corresponding to their speed?

Most tampers or other machines, in our area (Midland) at least, seem to run as 6Uxx or 6Jxx, but I've never really stopped to think about it! Likewise, engineering trains mostly seem to run as 6Gxx - in all cases, the same applying even to inter-regional trains.

Edit: missed your last bit. The first character does indeed reflect their maximum speed, so mostly 6s and (less so) 7s. VSTP light locos are sometimes quite imaginative: 0Z31 or 0Z56, for example, occasionally giving a clue as to the traction involved!

Yeah, 6J was what was coming to mind, but nice to know there's some variation!

Another one which I just thought up! Test Trains run variously as 1Q/3Q. What does the first number indicate - NMT versus other, slower test trains? However, I'm sure I've heard of non-NMT trains running under 1Q headcodes...

Some areas also have special headcodes for certain types of moves. For instance down in Cardiff light Class 59s are always described as 0Z59, locomotives shunting towards another box are 0Z16.

Indeed, we certainly have some non-NMT 1Qxx trains - probably more than we do 3Qxx. No idea what the difference is though! 2Qxx (usually 2Q08?) invariably proves to be (one of?) the converted ex-150 units.

Just on a pedantic note, the class 950 is a one off and was never converted from a 150, it was purpose built.

Babcock Rail run their machines with the following headcodes in Scotland:

6T40 - DR73803
6T46 - DR73932
6T47 - DR73933
6J51 - DR73941

The TRU (950001) does indeed run permanently as 2Q08 throughout the network. The weed killing MPV always runs as 6Z06 in Scotland, while internal Scottish engineer's workings are given headcodes in the 6Kxx range. Shunts between boxes on TCB lines in Scotland are typically described as 0L99, the requirement for this is shown in the relevant signalbox special instructions.

950001 can and does run as 2Z08 if not recording (many test trains run as xZxx when not recording).
