Hi all, I'm off to glasgow for a few days next weekend. I'm already planning on riding the clockwork orange, visiting queen street and central stations, and taking a trip to edinburgh for a day over the E&G. can anyone else recommend anything interesting to do while I'm there (doesn't have to be rail related). Edinburgh: Royal Yacht Britannia at Leith's excellent (been twice) if you like ships. Castle. Zoo and see the Pandas. Dynamic Earth by Holyrood good but maybe more for kids. Glasgow: Wife and I went to the Burrell collection last year (not quite my thing more old arty stuff) but a nice setting. Heard mixed reviews of new Transport museum near Partick. Tallship next door to the museum. Botanical Gardens. Kelvin Grove museum & Art Gallery - years since I was there - apparently they have some objects that belong to me (on "loan" by a forebear). The Koh-i-noor is a very good curry house, or at least was several years ago when I last visited. They have a buffet which is great for sampling various dishes. Off Sauchiehall Street and above the M8. Good pub a few doors down too - Bon Accord - though you're never short of good pubs in Glasgow (even if you don't drink)!

Fancy a Bridie? Check out Wikipedia; and if it interests you then your best bet is probably to go to Crombies of Edinburgh which is only a short walk away from Waverley station. If you like museums there's some good ones in Edinburgh; although the only train content is a William Hedley loco in the Royal Museum and an 0-4-0 saddle tank.in the Museum of Scotland next-door. One interesting and slightly unusual Edinburgh museum is Mary Kings Close, a medieval alley off the High St that was preserved purely because other buildings were built over the top of it.

I, too, would recommend the Falkirk Wheel for a good half-day out. Take the train from Glasgow Queen Street to Falkirk High then a pleasant walk along the canal. However, as indicated on the web page linked to by the previous poster, the Wheel is closed for maintenance until 29th November, and is thus a whole lot less exciting at the moment.

If you are spending time in Edinburgh, the Camera Obscura is an absolutely fascinating place.

When it's working it's wheely interesting  If nothing else you can always take a trip out on the Fife Circle, across the Forth Bridge and back again. If you don't mind walking up hills, get out at North Queensferry for a walk around underneath the bridge and some food. There's the Bo'ness & Kinneil railway of course; although if you're on public transport I'm not sure how easy it is to get to nowadays. Bo'ness's bus service wasn't great when I lived up that way. Also in Edinburgh the Princes St Gardens are worth a stroll, plus you get some nice views of the railway as well (see my avatar!). Calton Hill is worth it for the views alone too!
