This site has some old maps of the UK with the railway-lines on them.
http://www.sabre-roads.org.uk/maps/
OS historical 1:25,000 is a good choice!

Funnily enough, someone had sent me a link to SABRE, from a NON railway forum, very recently. Before that, I had never heard of it/them.

Thank you.

I found it difficult to identify railway lines unless one starts with an area I know and figure out which lines represent railways.

In Mapnik (OpenStreetMap) at high magnifications, railways are grey strips containing white dashes. Elsewhere they are black lines though in OSStreetView stations at high magnifications are yellow blocks marked "Station" or equivalent.

What I can't work out is where the scale of the current magnification is displayed, if indeed it is at all. Can anyone help me on this? Otherwise the maps are not very useful for planning layouts. I can't find a "legend" anywhere.

This site added to Signalling links Wiki in the Rail Maps section. Thanks again VonTrapp.

That is a bit of a pain! However the OS maps will generally have grid lines at either 1km or 10km intervals (depending on the scale of the original) which should make it possible to derive a scale.

Thanks welshdragon. Anyone know why the map has two sets of navigation and zoom controls, one below the other, or could this be just a temporary bug?

(added) Its URL includes the word beta,so it's probably not quite ready yet. Anyway, I've added it to our Signalling Links Wiki before it gets forgotten.
