I have noticed on West Hampstead trains will ring out for the road 3-4 minutes before booked time. Is this prototypical for trains to ask for the road so early? If the road is set the trains appear to depart early, is this acceptable for a passenger train to leave 3-4 minutes before booked time?* * I understand the Passenger TT and the Working TT may have a different departure time. Trains do tend to TRTS in reality quite early these days, and it is quite location-specific as well. As for departing early, I think they are only allowed to depart 30 seconds early, although I may be wrong on this. More specifically, they advertise that the doors will be closed 30 seconds before departure, although in my experience no guard sits there clockwatching once the doors are closed. Log in to reply |

TRTS should (if the train is running on time) be early enough to allow a right time departure. Bear in mind that if the train is being dispatched, then the dipatcher should not signal to whoever is closing the doors to do so without a proceed aspect on the platform starting signal (unless local rules allow otherwise). Therefore, the TRTS may well be 3 minutes or more before the departure time to allow any level crossings to be lowered and confirmed clear, any signals to be cleared. Then and only then can the dispatch procedure begin, doors be closed (often 30-40 seconds before departure is often advertised for this), which then gives a right time departure of the train actually pulling away. That is in theory at least, and does suggest that the 30 second TRTS SimSig uses to be a little tight to allow a right time departure in some cases, and even less time if the game speed has been turned up, or for a solo player of a large sim area. It's something which has been discussed before, and many of us are waiting for a correction in the core code to give more realistic TRTS times (which may well vary from station to station within a sim too), particularly where level crossings are involved. V4.0.14 introduced a one-minute TRTS. Any earlier has a somewhat more severe impact as a whole bunch of other things need to be considered such as chained rules. In other words it'll take a lot more effort for earlier TRTS without the risk of introducing problems.

It was right after the update I had a save from previous loader version. 1D17 and 1D19 both rang out a clear 3 minutes early. I also had 1Z24 (an Olympic extra scheduled to depart at the same time) scheduled for an 830 departure, this rang out at the usual time, perhaps that's relevant?

Here's a picture and a save, I caught it late however you can see from the picture 1D19 (as did 1D17) rang out a full 4 minutes early.

From my standpoint at work when I used to dispatch trains. If everything is running as one would hope, TRTS should be given approx. 2 minutes before the scheduled departure of a train (Class 1/2/3). If the "Line is clear" the controlling signaller would then "lash off" appropriately, if it not, the staff dispatching the train (were it a manned station) or the traincrew must wait their turn accordingly. Class 5's can be TRTS'd early if a) there is a driver in the cab & b) if the traincrew are happy to depart early (more often that not they are!). If a Cl.5 service has been TRTS'd early having fulfilled one of the aforementioned criteria, it is down to the controlling signaller as to whether the train can go early (without causing a knock on delay to other traffic) or not. From experience a Cl.5 travelling over a distance to form a service is usally held back to more or less departure time (unless there is a suitable margin/headway as covered above), whereas a ECS to the depot may get sent early or if the 'box are awaiting a slot a little late. At West Hampstead normal TRTS is two minutes before departure time, but often station staff press the TRTS 3-4 minutes before departure time. At St.Pancras, they always press the TRTS 5 minutes before departure.
