I am fairly new to SimSig but have managed to run the Brighton simulation from 0000 to 0900, learning how to solve various "problems" as I go.

I have noticed that when trains enter the area at Hove yard, Preston Park up sidings, or Wall sidings I get a phone call requesting permission to enter, and I reply OK. However, the train ID does not appear on the track. It seems that the best option is to press I on my keyboard, enter the ID, and then click on next signal on the train's route. The ID then appears. I then set the route.

When trains enter at any of the Lovers Walk Depot signals, however, there is no phone call and the train ID just appears on the track, which makes things much easier.

Also trains leaving Brighton platform 3 on the up main line lose their train ID at signal 434 which changes to *X**. I have now got in the habit of interposing the train ID at signal 434 before setting the route, to avoid confusion later.

Are the above "problems" faults with the simulation and/or the timetable, which could be corrected in a later version, or are they intentional features, in which case am I handling the situation correctly.

Hi,
These are intentional (not sure about the platform 3 bit however...) though I'll leave it to a more knowledgeable member to explain why!
As a note, you can also insert TDs by right clicking on the blank one

Have you checked out the Manual on the Wiki? This may help you when you are running the sim.

The staff at these locations have no way of entering a train description into the signaller's (yours!) train describer. In fact there is no Berth for train descriptions to be entered. This is as per real life.

*If* you have tunred off the option (F3 menu, "Control" tab) "Right-click cancels route", then you will be able to right-click on a signal and bring up a list of information and options, including "Interpose" where available.

This is as per real life - which is what SimSig tries to simulate.

I do not get this. What part(s) of platform 3 is the train departing from. Where is its Train Description?

Where is the Description entered while the train is in the station? It has to be at Signal 450 (as opposed to at the buffers), or at 438 if it's occupying the far end of P3.

Well thank god the Thameslink project have now provided TD berths for Brighton wall sidings, Hove Yard, Preston Park sidings along with their new Down Main sidings, it's only taken 12yrs to my knowledge to get those berths added. But that alas this is the current modern real world and the sim is based on timetables and the layout upto and not beyond February's 2014 tt and layout revisions so these are not shown.

For the P3 issue, when the train comes in from Preston Park or Lewes directions, and is not able to fit fully between 450 and the buffers, the ID of the outbound train is put in at 450, and not at 438.
Also, if you put a short train in between 438 & 439, you have to manually interpose the new ID in there as well.

Thanks for the information in the replies above. I now have understand better how things work in real life in that, if I give permission for a train to exit a siding, I need to add the ID to the correct berth.

Thanks also for the information about trains leaving Brighton platform 3. I have now checked this out by running the time period from 0623 that includes trains 2W08 and 2W12. When the train is scheduled to depart its ID is shown at signal 450, but the TRTS white light is flashing by signal 438. (The red line is displayed for the full platform length). If I interpose the ID at signal 438 before setting the route all is now OK.

I have read the 4th paragraph in the Train Describer section of the manual. Platform 3 seems a bit more complicated.

It would seem that a good general rule is, if the TRTS white light is flashing at a signal, but there is no ID shown, you need to manually add it before setting the route.
