I'm working on a timetable but is the a website that I can use for the length of train (aka the amount of coaches) I know about RealTrainTimes but that dosn't show how long or the class of train half the time Log in to reply |

I'm working on a timetable for Brighton but can't find a website that will show the length of the trains (like if it was formed of 4 or 8 coaches) Could anyone help out by pointing me into the direction of a website that does show the length Log in to reply |

Hey Hyper, If you go to the downloads section, other stuff and download length calculator the tool will really help. It's an Excel document so you either need Excel or OpenOffice Calc to use it. It has lengths for coaches, EMU's, DMU's and other kinds of trains as well as conversion tables. Download the Length Calculator here Make sure you've logged in to see it

What I mean was if it was a 4 or 8 coach, I know for example each coach on a Class 377 is roughly 20-21m long

All I'd know to do was If I knew each coach was 21 Meters then I'd just punch in the math of each coach. Or If I can't find the length of a train then I use the measurements from a previous timetable somebody else made, and just hope it's correct

I mean I don't know how many coaches long the trains are (they very) or even which Class of train. For example,leaving Brighton along the East/West Coastway lines, they use Class 171/313/377 I know roughly the lenth per coach but I don't know how many coaches for each train as each one is sligtly different. I think he means diagrams, like is it 4/8/12 car sets. If it's for Brighton, then join the 'UKModernEMU' group on Yahoo Groups, which has some Southern/FCC Diagrams that will be of use, will tell you if it's booked for 4, 8 or 12. FGW is mainly a 3 car class 158's or 2 car class 158/class 150 if substituting for a 158 3 car For freight bits, I generally try to google the headcode and the destination to see if there's any photos/video's online. I know about the 171's as I used that to go on Holiday but the FCC/SN trains are more varied Also if SN use there 313's or 377's Log in to reply |

The only other thing you can try & get is a station working book for Brighton which covers the period the timetable you are writing covers as they generally have the formation of each train in them. If it's a multiple unit/fixed formation train you're looking for, this Wiki page gives the length, along with other details. If you don't know which class of train works certain services, post them below- someone will probably know what class tends to work which service. They're incredibly varied around Brighton - your best option really is to look on one of those Gen groups previously mentioned by Underwood

Will do, I might also go down to Brighton (as it's not far from me) and just get an idea of the typical hourly pattern
