Train Location Reporting still not fixed 03/02/2014 at 11:17 #54888

No matter what setting I choose, drivers still keep phoning me up to tell me they're waiting at a red signal. I tried changing the setting to 15 minutes, then Never, but still they keep ringing me up every few minutes to tell me of their plight. I've got more important things to do with my time than acknowledge their whinging and whining.

PS There should be an extra context menu option named "Don't call me again".

Perhaps a way round this would be to introduce GSMR, where I believe you now just acknowledge a "text message" type communication and tell the driver to wait or to ring, but this would still involve you acknowledging them.

At the end of the day they, and you, are trying to provide a service (in real life, at least) and they are entitled to know why they are being delayed, and if they didn't keep pestering you I'm sure they'd get a stern talking to from their managers for just sitting there and doing nothing.

For me phone calls are the most annoying thing about signalling, both on SimSig and in real life, as they always happen just as you get to a good bit of your book or sit down for lunch, but they're part of the job, and so part of SimSig.

Perhaps you should try a different timetable, sim or have less problems on, then you'll hold up less trains and get less phone calls?

drivers have an obligation to call and report/remind you of their position. the time they wait initially will depend on local conditions (eg 0 minutes boards on the signal post), weather, and presence of train detection. they are also obliged to remind you of this intermitently. try googling "Rule 55" for more details, rather than me writing a long boring paragraph.

place yourself in the drivers position, you have a timetable to keep to, can't see the whole picture via a signalling panel and only have the signalmans word to go on in regards to what action to take. how would you know whether he has forgot you, or is simply waiting to put you into a later path, find a gap, or deal with an emergency possession in front of you.

not an option in real life. what if you tell him that, then find you can't get a release on the signal due to an interlocking fault?

note: with reference to train reporting being set to 15 minutes. that will relate to the sim message "train X still waiting at signal XYZ not being shown for 15 minutes rather than two minutes, which is when the driver will always call to make contact.

All very nice and proper in real life, but then why in SimSig is there this great but non-implementable option named "Never"?

Ah, so we're talking about the Messages box, not the Telephone calls. Damn. Maybe it's fruitless asking the developers to implement "Never" for phone calls relating to waiting at a red?

Also I've never been able to make sense of the "Always" option - they always phone in anyway, so why have it at all?

If the developers provide these options, why on earth can't they make them work properly? In all the years I've been playing, this has never been fixed.

If I were a driver I'd be offended to hear a mechanical voice replying to call back in 2/5/15 minutes.

Playing SimSig can quickly turn from a rewarding pastime into banging your head against a brick wall.

I can't really work out what the exact issue is here, to be honest. Are you asking that drivers never, ever phone from a signal at red as they are required to in real life (hence why Simsig, as a simulation, replicates this), or are you trying to report a bug with the system?

At least Simsig gives you the luxury of only having to hold one phone conversation at a time

You got it in one. That's what it says on the tin - "Train Location Reporting: Never".

This is approaching the discussion about SimSig as a game or a simulation.

Currently SimSig's intention is to simulate a signal box - and phone calls are part of that. Count yourself lucky, we get loads and loads of *other* phone calls, not just ones from drivers! The last thing you want when it's busy and disrupted is platform staff asking (stupid?) questions or track workers wanting to block a line.

Well, that wouldn't be too hard to simulate. After all, we have "wrong food trolley".

Perhaps an optional checkbox labelled "All types of phone calls allowed" might slow down those who boast they can run simulations at 2:1 speed or faster. :)

As we all know, SimSig has little helpers (such as the F2 Train List window) built in to make life a little easier for unpaid enthusiasts like me. Without reopening the can of worms about whether SimSig is a game or a simulation, it might be worth hearing from one of the developers as to exactly what is intended by the Train Location Reporting options.

Train location reporting options are for the message box i.e. if you set it to always, you will get a message for every train past every timing point - 1Z00 passed 'somewhere' on time etc. It is COMPLETELY unrelated to drivers phoning in at a red.

I think you misunderstand what the Train Location Reporting option does. It has nothing to do with phone calls.

the train location reporting is not to do with phone calls. selecting always means in the message box for each train it Will display when it passes every timing point, arrives and departs at all its station etc
