Dawlish Down Platform last night (not my picture):



Rumour has it that the rails are now unsupported, with the sea wall having collapsed beneath it, though even if it's just the platform it's still pretty bad! (for those who aren't familiar with the area, the platform at this point is just supported by some wooden supports)

I must say I've been surprised that until now Dawlish has escaped the severe weather we've been having recently - well it's certainly got it's share now!

I'd be expecting some lengthy disruption, not least because the weather forecast is far from good; it's going to hamper repairs and maybe even make it worse.

PS: I'm rather pleased I live up here in sheltered Mid Devon atm!

Subject to an improvement in rail conditions we would look to start some services from approximately 0930 at the earliest.

We are unable to guarantee customers any road transport as roads have experienced the same disruption due to the weather .

We would strongly advise customers not to attempt to travel until conditions show improvement.

Please check JourneyCheck website and Twitter feed @FGW for up to date information before attempting to travel.

Think that one shows the damage quite well.

The weather in Exeter is poor enough, and we've got some flooding in places, with more rain even now. I'm very glad that I'm not more near Dawlish!

reminds me of Toby's Tightrope from one of the early thomas episodes. I'm guessing authorising the driver to pass at danger and proceed at caution isnt going to work with that one?

It's not exactly going to be an overnight T3 job is it?!

Network Rail spokesman told the BBC 4-6 weeks. I'm saying probably more. Definitely months.

FGW currently saying job stopped until 23:59 on the 05/03/2014 (subject to change), 1C99/1A40 cancelled until 28th February 2014.

There is a set stuck either side, luckily, they managed to operate Sunday night/Monday morning, but after that, no chance.

There are rumblings of possibly using a 57/6 & Mk3 day coaches to supplement the trapped FGW stock to provide some sort of decent service. XC have 5-22x units trapped as well. Maintenance could become fun as units usually go to SPM for heavy work, but Laira could be used if they can get equipment down there by road.

Personally I can not see it being open anytime soon though, have heard that the down platform at Dawlish has taken more than a battering, and bits of it are no longer there!

At least they've managed to time it along side the Whiteball blockade, nothing like getting it all done in one hit

I lived in Dawlish from berth for nearly 20 years and still visit the folks down there and I've never seen so much damage (Pictures via twitter enclosed). The wall collapse at Sea Lawn/Riviera Terrace is where the footpath dips down to the beach,As you can see its also taken out the road. Damage also to the smaller walls sections towards Black bridge. The down platform has been partly lost , and the area around Marine Parade (towards Kennaway Tunnel) has on the down line ,ballast wash out,railings flattened on the up side with ballast thrown onto the road. The bridge underneath the station viaduct has also been splattered !

The Network Rail guy interviewed on telly gave a 4-6 weeks estimate which I thick may be optimistic !

on the six o'clock BBC news they said that the government has raised the issue about the problems with the areas around somerset, Devon and Cornwall that flood regularly. someone in the government has suggested that they cut the line from Cornwall from the national network. bet they regret closing the old southern route.

there was a second route from Exeter - Newton Abbot at one time from Exeter City basin Jcn via Heathfield

I believe the Heathfield route is significantly more built-over than the LSWR mainline via Okehampton

Does Exeter Panel have local (or emergency) control panels for taking control of Newton Abbot, Totnes & Paignton? If not, I can see there being rather a lot of fun & games trying to run any kind of emergency service...

Paignton is a seperate Box, as for NTA and TOT services are currently running, albeit severely disrupted so presumably the signalling isn't too badly affected

Still a preferable route though. Whilst there is a Sainsbury's in the way of extending this line, there's a Sainsburys in the way of the Kingskerswell bypass near Newton Abbot and that's still getting a bridge over it!

Are you sure? RTT for Totnes today shows everything caped.

So it begins to look as if there's no local panels. I'm pretty certain the cables will have been wiped out along with the railway, so Exeter can no longer control the remote interlockings at Newton Abbot & Totnes and there's no other way for anyone to take control. So if they want to run anything at all it will have to be done by winding points and emergency absolute block working. And where are all the MOMs whose job it would presumably be to do that? Well there's probably not enough of them anyway and those there are (who aren't cut off by the weather) are presumably desperately working on all the various other weather issues down there.

Today's Guardian suggested emergency bus services Exeter - Plymouth; what's the odds that's how it'll be until they get something open at Dawlish (and I reckon the estimated 6 weeks will be a gross underestimate, particularly with another couple of storms coming in over the next few days to wash away a bit more)? Not good!
