Hi,

I'm looking at running a SimSig with a friend of mine I can only connect with him as a Cilent. I would like to be the server now and again if I can.

My internet connection is through a netgear router.

My pc uses windows 7.

We tried a test connect but he can't connect to me.

Thanks

You need to open a port on your router, basic details can be found on the Wiki I believe.

Hi,

I found the wiki page ok but portforward.com states I need a static ip to port forward from my pc is on a wireless network.

Now where do I go. I'm not very IT wise so I'm not touching something I know nothing about.

any other ideas

portforward.com had free software advertised but I'm not sure on it being safe to use.

Can anyone help me out with this or am I stuck as a client.

A non-static IP should be fine - just appreciate your external IP may change from time to time.

You will need to find out your internal IP address (usually starting 192.168). Simsig will tell you this, or run a command prompt and type ipconfig.

You will also need to find out your external IP addreess (type "what is my IP" into google and it will tell you).

You need to log in to your routers admin page, find the port forward screen and configure it for port 50505 to forward to your interal IP.

This might help for netgears: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/24046

You can then use the external IP to check all is working by using the port checker like http://ping.eu/port-chk/

If you read the whole page in the Wiki, you will find this bit at the bottom:

"http://portforward.com/ is a useful site for configuring specific routers. The site tries to direct you to a link to buy their automatic set-up software (PFConfig) at a number of stages in the process. However, if you keep searching on each page there is always a link somewhere to the next stage in setting up your router manually, avoiding the need to make an unnecessary purchase."

What's changed since the last time you posed the same sort of question in this thread in 2011 because you managed to get things working then?

Internal IP address is usually shown when starting up SimSig as a server host on the last start-up page.

Your internal IP (the one shown by Simsig) is the one.

If you haven't changed your router, the only thing you would need to change would be the internal IP to which the service is pointing from that of your old machine to that of your new laptop. Nothing else would need to change.

Think of it like this:

Your router is like a signaller for internet traffic. When someone wants to connect to SimSig running on your laptop, it's a bit like the express arriving at the terminus on the up fast. Your router is currently programmed to send it into platform 1 which is your old PC. But your laptop is the equivalent to platform 2. You need to edit the timetable (reconfigure your router) to tell it to send the traffic to platform 2.

If you still have a DG834 it is under firewall rules / inbound services.

Hopefully you have the service for SimSig there already. If not you will need to set it up.

This is a good guide. Ignore the emule stuff and set the service up for port 50505.

Maybe it would help if you could post a few screen shots of your router setup. You need to set up Simsig as a service. Here's mine as an example. You should have a similar screen call services (or inbound services).

OK great. well it looks like you pretty close, but your routing to your default gateway by the looks of it.

Can you go to your laptop, click the start button then type cmd and in the command prompt type ipconfig. Then paste the results here. I've done mine as below:

OK so you see how my "server IP address" matches my laptop. You need to do the same.

Edit your inbound services to set the "send to lan server" to 192.168.0.4 which is your laptops IP address.

Once done then we can test out.

That is quite likely to happen every time you turn your computer or router on or off (and may even happen silently with them both on). Any time you want to host a session you need to check your external IP so you can advise those wishing to join and also edit the service in your router to point to whatever internal IP has been allocated to your computer at that time.

Your internal IP shouldn't change too often and if it does you can make it static.

Your external IP (unless you have paid for a static IP) may change regularly (or it might not), but that is outside your control.

Right. Now were set to test it.

Start your favourite SimSig and run as a server. Then separetely browse to this site: http://ping.eu/port-chk/

The site will helpfully show your external IP at the top. Put in the external IP and the default port 50505 and click go.

If all is working it should say port is open and also in SimSig you should get a message like this:

If you get both of these - job done!
