Nice video spoilt by letterbox distortion, lousy background sound and Dave's incessant voiceover. I tried watching it on YouTube directly, playing with different display settings but couldn't change the aspect ratio, resulting in everything looking too wide. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks Jan! I installed YouTube Center in Firefox and it automatically removed the letterbox resulting in a wide strip that fully fills the screen. Unfortunately even after checking YTC's settings I couldn't find a way of varying the aspect ratio, so everything still looks a bit wide. I suspect this is Dave's own doing. Is there any way to vary the aspect ratio in YTC? I checked out a couple of his earlier HD videos and watched them in a larger screen (nice) - no letterbox effect. It should add some additional buttons below the video title, one of which allows you to play around with the aspect ratio. While it might not be perfect, Stretch 16:9 looks like a reasonable setting to me.

That did the trick thanks - I didn't see that row of buttons. My settings for this video: Install YouTube Center. Open the video link in the first post in this thread. Hover the mouse over the title "DAVE'S MODEL RAILWAY PULLING UP THE INCLINE" shown in the black bar at the top of the video and it will turn into an underlined link. Click this link and this will take you to the same video but on YouTube (a good trick to remember where you will have more options to manipulate the display than a video link embedded in a forum post). On the YouTube page, look for the same title which will now be below the video. Below this is an avatar (pic) of Dave Howarth and below this, a small horizontal menu titled Download - Repeat - [Turn lights on/off] - Resize - Aspect. Click Resize and a vertical drop-down menu will appear. Select Fit to Content (Large - Aligned). Click Resize again to close it. Similarly, click Aspect and select Stretch 16:9. The sideways distortion will be gone but the video will now be surrounded by a vertical letterbox (vertical black bar on each side). At the bottom RH corner of the video screen itself click the Full Screen ([ ]) icon and the video will display in full screen without the bars. Press Esc to exit Full Screen. I haven't found any better solution than this apart from downloading the video using Video DownloadHelper and viewing it with an app such as VLC Media Player. My problem may be due to using a HP Pavilion dv7 notebook which has an unusually wide screen, default resolution 1920 x 1080 which causes problems even with SimSig windows. I've played with it a lot and still haven't found the perfect solution. Log in to reply |
