Where is Wichnor Junction? 17/03/2014 at 10:03 #57197

Wichnor Junction is supposed to be the far end of this area but it's not marked on the panel View. I presume it's down the line past Alrewas but amazingly when I looked up maps of Network Rail's National Rail Network I can't find this marked anywhere (maybe because it's not a station but a junction?).

Can someone please provide a map link on which it's marked, also preferably add it to the panel at the next update?

Great map, thanks. That cleared it up. Would you mind posting a link to the map and I'll add it to the Wiki.

Max,
A quick look at the Working Timetable (Section CC which is found by a quick search on the Network Rail web pages)for this area clearly shows it's location relative to other places stations and junctions.

Try this link

http://www.networkrail.co.uk/browse%20documents/timetables/working%20timetable%20(wtt)/wtt%20maps/cc_timetable.pdf

Just taking a further look on the Wiki if you look on the documentation section there is a link to the WTT maps already sorted by the timetable sections, this includes all sections covering all Sims.
Taking a look at the Kings Cross sim for example Biggleswade is not shown on the Sim but is referenced and a little bit of searching describes where it is. If you are really nit picking Aston North Jct is also shown as to the limits of the sim but that also is not shown as text at the opposite end to Wichnor Jct but does it really matter that it is not shown. I really think the sim developers have done a great job and we are arguing over a small point which getting back to my main gripe is that people are too bothered to do a bit of searching to find something that is on the wiki if only they were to look instead of just posting a question.

I've done geographic maps for most simulations in the past as they were released, but the plethora of recent releases (and even I've been not aware of some of them until release) has caused me to lag behind recently.

If i don't know where a place is i look it up in a book on railway maps for around the country. I have one book on railway maps up to 1947 and the modern version of how the railway is nowadays.

Most (if not all) maps available for free only show passenger routes and stations. For more detailed mapping, you'd have to buy a rail atlas. If you're interested, The Baker Rail Atlas is a geographical rail map, showing all freight, passenger and preserved lines. Some detail, including junction names, is included. The map is also to scale. More detailed information can be found in TRACKAtlas, which shows track-level detail of main running lines, and railway mileages. The map is pseudo-geographical, but not to scale (stretching and shrinking occurs to fit different densities of infrastructure in). The ultimate in detail are the set of 5 Quail Maps, which show track-level schematics of the entire rail network, including depots etc.

Max, I've reverted your change on the wiki.

While a clearer mentioning of where Winchor Jn is exactly in the world is desirable, the map linked covers the mostly-closed South Staffordshire line which is only tangibly relevant to users of the simulation. As most of your arguments seem to be in favour of spoon-feeding the newbies, I feel posting a link to a mostly irrelevant map is only going to confuse persons new to the sim by referring to several locations that are not on Aston sim.

I've ammended it to say "just beyond Aston North Jn all the way through to Wichnor Jn (near Burton on Trent)" which provides equivalent geographical context.

Thanks to all who responded. I agree with JamesN that the map link I supplied covers a wider area and thus could be confusing. However, it was the best of all the ones I looked at. northroad's link is to a much better map for this sim (thanks northroad), so I added this to the introduction as it must help anyone who is unfamiliar with this area. I don't consider this spoon feeding.

The original reason for this thread was that Wichnor junction was not marked on the sim panel. If the sim extends to Wichnor Jn and includes Alrewas signal box, why isn't Wichnor Jn itself actually included on the panel as a junction? Or is it controlled by Derby? Even to be shown in hollow grey as controlled by another signal box would have avoided confusion.

Moving on, Derby is named at the far end of the sim panel but not mentioned in the Introduction, only Burton-on-Trent, so I further amended JamesN's description to read

Quote:
all the way through to Wichnor Jn (near Burton on Trent, en route to Derby)
Now we should all be happy.

If nothing else, this thread has provided nice links to map resources and I'll make sure they find their way into the Wiki Rail Maps section on the Links page.
