221129 came to grief at the entrance to Barton Hill depot early this morning, trapping several voyagers in the depot. It was clearly visible in its sorry state as I passed by on 1A08 at just after 8 a.m., on my way to work. By the time I returned on 1C22 it had been cleared away.

Wouldn't want to speculate on the cause (though if it's in a depot certain possibilities present themselves rather quickly), but it does look as if that vehicle went both ways on a set of points. Can't have helped the day's service awfully much!

Nope - at 6pm last night it was back on the rails but still in the same location with several other sets trapped. By this morning everything was back to normal and the depot was empty.

I went for a bit of a nose during the afternoon on 24th March. Looking down from St. Philips Causeway (the bridge immediately north of Barton Hill depot) I could see that the derailment had trapped 4 more XC units in the depot. I gather that the relief lines heading out of Bristol TM were also closed and this cut the number of tracks available towards Lawrence Hill & Filton Abbeywood from 4 tracks to 2. I also heard on the radio that some damage had been caused to signalling equipment. Several cancellations occurred during the day while some FGW and other XC trains were delayed to varying degrees. For anyone interested to know, 221129 was working train 5P00 (0502hrs Barton Hill WRD - Bristol Temple Meads) but I gather that this is normally worked by a Class 220 not a 221!

While I was in the small public park next to where the lead car of 5P00 ended up - which was how I got the number 221129 - I saw the power car in question move at 1730hrs this evening from the derailment site back towards Barton Hill depot.

The 0754 Severn Beach - Bristol Temple Meads, STA 0832, arrived at 0851 into BTM on 24th March but I was having a long weekend and wasn't on it! I had to get the 0754 Severn Beach to Bristol TM this morning (Tuesday 25th) and was glad that the lines were all back open!

Two ECS movements, both designated as STP by realtimetrains, later departed Barton Hill WRD for Barton-under-Needwood. The trains were:

I understand it that all the sets involved in those two movements were Class 221s: according to a post on another forum, 5Z55 comprised 221122 & 221137 while 5Z29 comprised 221129. And as far as XC keeping those trains all in one place with only one exit is concerned, the phrase "Don't keep all your eggs in one basket" springs to mind!

To be honest you'd probably have been fine - I was on 2K05 and 2A99 as usual on Monday and didn't notice any problems on those. The Exeter-Parkway train was turned back at Temple Meads, but that's not completely unusual.
