The grey banner has a spilling mistook. Replace "Remository Newest". Is it intentional that your freeware sims cannot be seen without logging-in? They can't be seen or downloaded by the public. Can't see anything wrong with "Remository Newest" Remository - Name of Joomla Extenstion for download area (I'm sure this has been discussed previously) Newest - latest files in Remository... When not logged in it also comes up with the text "Sorry, the Repository is not available to casual visitors - please login" abvoe the grey banner. I can't comment on SimSig policy, but personally I don't see a problem with it. You have to register to get freeware downloads elsewhere, why should SimSig be any different? I agree it's pretty stupid that "Remository" is so confusingly like "Repository" and means about the same. You'd think they would have chosen a different name, e.g. "Vault". But this appears to be part of Joomla! and thus is beyond the ability of mere mortals to alter. Then again, if our own (Australian) Prime Minister confuses "repository" with "suppository", there's little hope for the English language. As far as needing to log in before being able to download free software, not to mention a limit on the number of files one can download each day, I also agree this is an irritation, but no more than a minor one, and certainly better than a full payware site, as with some other simulator products. Off-topic here, but what bugs me most is the two-minute evaluation limit on payware sims (only tried New Street so far). (added) I timed this one in real time using my watch. In either case you can see what sims are available without registering by reading the manuals or the forums, or by looking in the shop.

It took me a great deal of effort to persuade a few of my friends to play SimSig - in the end I reuploaded the necessary files for them. I doubt without this they would have even tried it. Some people see creating an account as a great barrier for something, and IMHO it should definitely be avoided.

Let's not forget that there are people out there who can take any application and make it their own, and by forcing people to register (which is rather simple compared to some other places) it allows the copyright owner (in this case Cajon Rail) to control the software being released, ensuring we relieve quality simulations that are not riddled with time-limits or advertising. Muzer: Have they considered that if they like Simsig so much and want to buy s sim like New Street that they'll have to register to pay for a license (which also requires a login for the License Manager) Log in to reply |
