Actually an advert but strangely compelling:

In my opinion, the only decent thing that came from the rebranding of Railworks/Train Simulator!

Thanks Geoff. Nevertheless I feel "compelled" to point out that the "we" referred to are NOT rail fans but TS2014 fans - or so they hope.

I feel a bit sickened by the deceptive marketing used in this ad. Sure, I love trying out any half-decent train/signalling simulator, but "rail fans" to me are those who make the extra effort to go outdoors in all conditions and spot trains, also those who have the time and money to enjoy train trips purely because they love trains at a 1:1 scale and are prepared to put up with hours of sitting in uncomfortable carriages in slow, inefficient old trains while boring scenery rolls past, because they bring back memories and foster camaraderie within the group. There are visits to real workshops, shunting yards, railway museums, etc. That's what being a rail fan means to me.

On the other hand, most of the screen clips used in this are external 3D views of real trains - pleasing to watch, whether in real life or in simulation, and quite different from the limited view inside a carriage, driver cab or even signal box. Very similar to the pleasure of watching realistic model trains from a distance (one of the fun bits of a train simulator is watching the sim train you're driving from an external perspective). The time compression resulting from incorporating multiple short clips of a wide variety of trains makes the ad more exciting, but conveniently omits the many dull and boring hours necessary to produce camera work of this type.

All these film clips seem to be of real trains. I couldn't spot any screen captures from the sim itself, which is very cunning of them.

There are a couple of (western) US railroads represented here (BNSF, UP, Alaska). We're (IMHO irrationally) paranoid about people seeing how the infrastructure works; I don't think it would be possible for me to visit dispatching centers and construct very detailed track maps of the sort that's needed to build SimSig without getting some attention from the police here! In that sense this video is representative of what you can do without (much) special permission, taking video of trains from public rights-of-way...and if you're the sort of person who sat through three minutes of train video and thought to critique it afterwards, then just maybe you're the sort of person whose spouse barely tolerates their train obsession. :-)

I don't know whether this is a reference to me personally, but I can't understand why you chose to bring one's spouse or partner into it. I have no problems with mine in this regard, but from my viewpoint of someone who enjoys train sims I can't help feeling how misleading this ad is when compared with the actual product it's trying to promote.

Seems a strange comment to me too.

I don't know about Australia, but over it's the modern plastic tat that's uncomfortable, not the heritage stuff!

Have you ever been on or seen a rail fan trip in Victoria. Trips in this state and others run carriages that were used on express interstate trains in the 50's. Many are restored 6 wheel bogie cars that are more comfortable than the latest country trains.

Out of interest, what's the preservation scene like in Australia?

Yes I have been on a couple of SteamRail trips. On both occasions the train was pulled by S class diesel, not steam (as promised), we had to wait over an hour for it to arrive as delays meant it had lost its "slot" in the system, the trip was slow particularly on rural sections where speed restrictions had to be applied as the track used was designated for freight, not passenger, trains, the air conditioning broke down in these wonderful comfy carriages leaving us sweltering, the time allowed at our destination was drastically curtailed due to aforesaid delays, and we arrived home very late and thoroughly p****d off. You have to love trains to want to go on another one.
