That brings back memories from my childhood, sitting in the front row (or occasionally the cab) of a first-generation DMU.

Of course, in those days you'd be given a token (on a big hoop) by Abbey box as you went past the sidings. Then exchange tokens at Bricket Wood where there's a passing loop.

I see there's still a vague sign of the coal sidings on the down side before the Bushey Mill Lane level crossing (which I can remember being converted from gates to AHB), but there also used to be another turnout opposite the station platform at Watford North, or Watford North Halt as we knew it, leading to some factory sidings. And, of course, the crossing keeper at North would exchange tokens with you again.

And finally the driver handed in the token to Watford Junction No.4 (I think) beside the double slip as we ran into the old platform 10. Or, if you were very lucky, we might go into 11 or even 12, but that was definitely a rare move.

My father used to go to school on that line when he was evacuated from London during the war. In those days it was used as a running-in turn for big locos like LMS Pacifics just out of the sheds.
