Trains entering without triggering the alert sound 08/09/2014 at 00:22 #64464

On a lot of sims (most of them being loader ones), I've noticed that sometimes trains enter without triggering the alert sound. This consistently applies to the whole area of some sims (Brighton, I think, is one of these), and with other sims consistently only to certain entry points but not others. Why is this such a widespread problem? Could it be fixed in a loader update, or is it something that would involve lots of sim updates? I can try to get a list of all sims affected if the latter, or if it would help with debugging.

This is down to the sim data for each particular sim hence why there is such a difference. It's set on an entry point by entry point basis.

Ah, I see. Is it a case of forgetting to trigger the notification for certain entry points then? I'm guessing then it wouldn't be fixable with a loader update, but each sim wit the issue would have to be updated - maybe unless the loader were to change how it interprets the entry point data so that it always plays the sound regardless of what was specified (though I expect that this, if it is possible - would probably have other undesired effects, else why would it be possible for sim writers to turn it off?). Ah well. It's just a shame because it makes sims unnecessarily harder (adds artificial difficulty rather than natural difficulty).

Um... it's default behaviour to play a sound (if one is set up in F3) that I don't think the developer can suppress even if (s)he wanted to! This is the first I've heard (sorry) of this. Anybody else experiencing this issue?

In F3 messages, do you have a sound allocated to "train entering system"?

EDIT: now I see Geoff got in as I was typing.

I find that if the entry happens at exactly the same time as another message occurs (such as a train passing a timing point) for which a sound is played, the entry sound can be suppressed by whatever the other sound that plays is. I have the “Train Location Reporting” set to “Always” in the “Messages” tab of the F3 Options window, so it happens to me a lot. This has always been the case for me in the four or five years I have been playing it. I hadn’t thought of it as a bug up to this point, so never reported it myself.

Hrm. I've been playing Brighton for a few hours and the sound has consistently failed to play every single time, whereas in many/most sims it plays correctly (incidentally, another thing I noticed is that the entry sounds in Liverpool Street are accidentally swapped in multiplayer - so the GE person gets the WA entry notifications and vice versa). I do have the sound set up in F3.

Hmm, I've just given Brighton a quick run, and at least in the first five minutes, I didn't notice anything strange. All entering trains, whether seeded or entering normally, played the correct sound, and saving and reloading didn't make any difference, either.
Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

OK, perhaps it's a wine thing? Seems a really weird issue though that it would only happen on some sims, but consistently. I just double checked in a few other (also Loader) sims and most of them again don't have the problem. It's just Brighton and a few others that I don't recall right now.
