Not sure if you have to be a member of the South West Railways and Heritage Group to view or not. This is NOT my photograph.

I don't think the job overran all that bad in the end. I think any overrun for the next couple of weeks is likely to be heavily overshadowed by pictures of the queues outside Finsbury Park at Christmas.

Christmas engineering works at Holloway Junction overran and Kings Cross was inaccessible so passengers were directed to Finsbury Park where trains were being turned round. Finsbury Park could not cope and chaos ensued.

I presume that if passengers had gone to Moorgate and travelled to FPK on the Northern City and thus arrived at FPK on the platform they could have jumped the queue, as it were.

It doesn't help that they got into a vicious circle at FPK as the day wore on. Because of the limited platform availability the idea was to get a train in, discharge, reload and away. However, the platforms and passageways were so congested that it was deemed unsafe to allow a train in to unload. Without the train in to unload, there was no way to have a train the prospective passengers on the platform could join, making the space for the next train to arrive etc. etc. News reports online (like for instance The Guardian).

The original plan was to run some trains wrong line into KGX via an UF>DF reversal, with the rest terminating but that was timed to take so long that passengers would just have alighted at FPK and taken the tube anyway (GN ones at least which had a booked stop). Though Down trains would have been able to run through on the slows. I believe EC planted some trains at KGX before the work started and these then effectively were trapped and out of service. Seems it was an ambitious plan which unfortunately failed, the alternative, I suppose, would have been to simply plan to close the service down and not even try and run anything.
