Playing Swindon Summer 2005 v4.0. 4A25 is scheduled to move Up through DIDCOT PARKWAY, DIDCOT EAST JN on the Relief Line (RL), finally terminating at "DIDCOT TC UP". No platform or siding marked as such. I assume the train needs to reverse at Didcot East Jn in order to get back to TC UP.

Where is UP, is it an acronym for something, and how do to signal the train to it? Thanks.
PS I've taken Dick's advice of turning off all ARS until I've learnt the sim. ;)

Incidentally, what does TC stand for? Can't find this described in sim manual or in either glossary.

Hi Max

If you look above the line into Didcot Parkway Platform 5 there's a hollowed out line. click the arrow pointing to the left (underneath the O in didcot TC)

Up is because it is on the "up" (towards London) side of the station

Signal diagram on wiki may help you (click on picture twice to read it)

Thinking about it a more correct name for this entrance would be Didcot 920 alas that's how it's currently referred to by the signallers and yard.

The "train" does have to reverse, but will do so automatically. In reality the shutters would then talk the train back into the yard via radio.

I'm not sure what TC stands for, but that is Didcot Yard, and the entrance to the Great Western Society. I'm going to assume it isn't Train Care as that's done across the line.

Thanks Gareth and BoxBoyKit.

After checking this against the signal diagram it seems I have to set a route Up past 913. Then I set a route Down via 913 (since it is on relief line), 6407 amd Didcot TC entry (circled). The train should automatically reverse into Didcot TC yard. Is this correct?



PS 920 is the exit signal out of Didcot TC, next to the entry point I circled.

Personally, I'd set the route out of platform 4 to 906 on the Up Relief. The train will then reverse behind either 6407 or 6405. This way, you aren't blocking the Down Relief, which will happen if you attempt to reverse behind 913.

I'd use this method to work out locations:


  • We know the train proceeds past Didcot Parkway, and stops at Didcot East Jn

  • The location after Didcot East Jn is Didcot TC

  • There is a siding labelled 'Didcot TC' nearby, and this train can only access one of the four entrances

  • Therefore, it is almost certain that this is where the train needs to go
  • .


As established on the Fairwater thread, individual sidings aren't always labelled, therefore you'll sometimes need to work out where the train should go by process of elimination. Following the timetable line-by-line (rather than looking at the end goal) helps when you're new to a layout.

Max, quite often shunters will use the exit signal as a convenient way to tell signalman where to send a train IN to a yard. Laira TMD in Plymouth is the same, they will say something like "Can I shunt 189 to 191?" which are both exit signals for Embankment Sidings and Laira Diesel Depot respectively.

Although both exit signals, they do represent a clear identity for each line that is not too complicated, so the system works well, and both signalmen and shunters understand it well.

TC is "Terminal Complex".

The nomenclature I use for exit signals is the entrance signal suffixed by X, so in this case you have S920X

If I'm right, the route should be set toward the grey arrow just in rear of 906, and then the route set via the GPLs into the yard. This certainly applies to trains leaving the yard at 920 then going toward Bristol, but I can't remember if it applies going in.

920 may be an exit signal but as said it's how the shunters inform the signaller where the train is to be routed, as it's on the same line. Likewise trains will also go in at 6411, 6413 and 2207 as well as coming out at all those signals.

To avoid potential confusion: in SimSig you just need to set the route to the grey triangle and the train will disappear from the area.

The situation in real life is more complicated.

I now realize I misread the signalling diagram (not really my fault here!)

West of Didcot Parkway, between 944 and 926, what eventually becomes the Up Relief is labelled "GOODS", which led me to route Up trains along the Down Relief, thinking that this is what was intended. Steamer and others are right. I should be routing 4A25 along the Up Relief line as far as 906, then it should reverse automatically into Didcot Terminal Complex.

Thanks for all your help.

(Added) what actually happened is that when I set the route to 906, the train stopped when its rear was abeam shunt signal 6407, and changed direction automatically, so all I needed to do was to set a route from 6407 to Didcot TC.
