Once incident I haven't seen simulated in SimSig is train failures.

Presumably this must be a relatively common real life situation where a train just packs up and stops - albeit probably not as common now as in days gone by.

It would be an interesting job for the signaller to call up some sort of loco to go to the rescue, possibly with a bit of wrong-line running or similar and some on-the-fly TT joins in order to push or pull the stricken train out of the way.

Has this been considered before?

We have train delayed due to brake/door problems, awaiting fitter, smashed window...

Features need to be considered on a how do you implement it for *any* sim. And there are just too many variables. Does the failure need a rescue loco? What sort of loco is needed? Where does it come from? Does it originate in sim or from 60 miles away. What happens when you're chained and the rescue loco needs to go through those sims aswell?

Your best option if you really wanted to simulate this would be use F11 to pause the 'failed' train, edit TT to join the 1Z99 that you've ad-hoc TT'd and do all your SLW etc.

It was done a few years ago with this 'manual' method in a MP WR chain with a handful of the other Devs and Testers and was good fun. An HST came across floodwater in Chopping Sodbury Tunnel (Bristol Sim) which caused total failure of both powercars. A light engine was detached from a SB FLHH coal train that was due to be recessed at Stoke Gifford. That thence worked wrong road from BPW to assist the failure from the front. All while diverting S Wales trains both via Bath and Gloucester. Made for an enjoyable couple of hours SimSig, no special features required.

Perhaps there could be an option when train failures occur, you can either wait for it to be repaired as is currently the only option, or send a loco or a compatible* unit to couple to it to get it "fixed" early.

* Obviously this would require some way of specifying which trains are compatible with which others, which would be quite a major addition.

Variations on the theme at http://www.SimSig.co.uk/index.php?option=com_kunena&view=topic&catid=13&id=723&Itemid=0#6750 and http://www.SimSig.co.uk/index.php?option=com_kunena&view=topic&catid=13&id=33987&Itemid=0&limitstart=10. Probably been discussed elsewhere as well.

Since the signaler wouldn't make that call, I assume that one would get a message saying "such and such train has FAILED. Such and such light engines from such and such location will be sent to assist" or "such and such train will combine with failed train" or "transfer passengers to such and such train" then "such light engines from such and such location will be sent to assist".
