Hi all,

Wasn't sure whether to put this into the Westbury or Waterloo sections so I will put it here instead. It would seem from the attached that SouthWest Trains have some plans afoot, including London Waterloo - Frome & Yeovil Pen Mill as well as 6 (or 8?) trains per day Yeovil Pen Mill - Yeovil Junction. When was the last time that curve saw regular passenger services?!

I was wondering when this would be public, I got news of this a few weeks ago.

Nevertheless, I think these changes are quite exciting. The Wareham Shuttles were tied in with the Swanage Railway on the paperwork I saw. I don't believe it is intended for these 159's to go to Swanage, and I have no idea how the interface with the Swanage Railway will work but I can state with confidence that that is the reason why those Wareham's are provided.

Given the rural nature of the West of England Line, I do feel that these changes are exciting, and make good use of paths that SWT already use for out of service Route Lerning, although these planned services more than exceed the number of paths that SWT have now. It will be good for Westbury too (more trains through there obviously).

One thing I can see though, be prepared for the number of "backwards" 159's to skyrocket, as the Westbury and Yeovil reversals will work great until the railway craps itself (as Single Line routes seem to do), so any service reformations could result in trains not being turned again, putting the First Class section at the Exeter end. Nothing Laverstock can't fix at the end of the day though!

The 159s ARE to do with Swanage; it explicitly states so in the document. It makes sense for them to be going to Swanage too, as otherwise they'd just make the shuttle connect off an existing Weymouth train. So that's exciting too.

That's what I imagined would happen, but as the shuttles to the Swanage Railway would need paths to the junction from Wareham, I would have thought that those path applications would have been contained in the same document?

Last scheduled Yeovil Junction - Pen Mill shuttle ran on 2 March 1968 if I remember rightly. It had only been re-directed from Yeovil Town 18 months or so previously, when the Town station closed.

Oh wow, that's impressive. Cheers for that.

I really hope this proves a success. How many journey opportunities does this open up that would otherwise have been infeasible without a bus across Yeovil? I can't think of many off the top of my head but surely some useful ones. Mostly between stations getting towards Weymouth and intermediate stations on the West of England, I suppose are the biggest improvements. Maybe even something like Salisbury to Weymouth would be faster now (though I haven't compared journey times via Soton). But said journeys would be more convenient because of the Summer Saturday through services for more laid back passengers who prefer not to change.

At the very least, nice to see Yeovil Junction living up to its name once more (from a passenger's perspective)

Because the First Class users are used to strolling onto the platform at the London termini and jumping into the nearest carriages rather than having to walk (which would be a good distance if we are talking about a Pendo, 225 or HST). Don't forget that a significant proportion of First Class users are senior Rail Company employees so can actually influence the way things happen.

It's also helpful for platform staff: they know where the wheelchair space will be and can therefore wait with disabled passengers and a ramp at the correct point on the platform. Same goes for catering teams at places like Preston.
