This one is pretty trivial. It’s a minor amount of annoyance, but IMO worth fixing if one of the devs is bored and wants something to hack together sometime. In the loader, when I choose to load a saved game, the file browser starts out in the last used directory, so I can instantly choose my most recent saved game. When I choose to save a game, the browser starts out in some default directory (the directory containing the sim data file, I believe), at least the first time during a particular session. I don’t save very often (since I encounter pretty much no crashes and I prefer to sort out my messes rather than retrying); my average SimSig session consists of loading a saved game, playing for a few hours, and saving and quitting. In this usage pattern, every single time I save a game I have to navigate to the directory I like to save my games in.

So, the feature request: if a session was started by loading a saved game, could the save game file browser default to the same directory the game was loaded from, instead of some constant location?

Thanks, if you get around to it, and no worries at all if you don’t!

I think you will find that you can setup your request using the Loader's Folder Options.

That appears to specify the search path for sims and timetables. Seems like a bit of a hack to use it (which part of it? Just the first item in the list, or what?) for the default location of save games too, but maybe that's just me.

I would advocate a system suggested by Hawk777 of just using the previously-used location, especially since this is what the "Load" dialogue in the loader does.

You need to use the "Add" feature. Nominate the location where you want to have the saves placed and tick the box. You may need to untick a current box.

Barry that's not what OP is asking for - they're asking for loader to remember the last directory used and bring that up when you load/save. Setting an alternative path won't fix that, as that just tells SimSig where the simulations and timetables folders are - not the sim-specific folder that save games for that simulation are put by default.

If it hasn't been done by the time I get home I'll raise this on the bug-board as a feature request, as I too like the idea....

Actually, the bigger reason why I don’t want to do this through Folder Options—even if the first entry there is used as the default save path—is that I don’t just save all my files in one place. I put my saves in a hierarchy of the form My Documents/SimSig/Saves/Sim/Timetable/Playthrough/Timestamp.ssg. So, for example, I might have a file named My Documents/SimSig/Saves/Exeter/Project X/1/1107.ssg, meaning 11:07 of my first playthrough of the Exeter Project X timetable. So, either I would have to repoint the Folder Options every time I finished a playthrough, or else I would have to point it somewhere up the hierarchy and still navigate down every time—less navigation, but still some.

Thanks for the comments!

Have you tried adding the locations in Folder Options and untick the defaults if necessary? I have used it in timetable testing and found it very helpful.

Barry, maybe you misunderstood: there is no single location which I want to default to. If I start playing Exter Project X tonight, I want the default to be My Documents/SimSig/Saves/Exeter/Project X/2. If I start playing something else, it should be somewhere else. Hence, defaulting to the last place a saved game was loaded from is the only thing that would really be useful to me. Any fixed default is either always wrong is usually wrong for how I like to organize my saves.

Thanks for the idea though!

I understand what you are after. Add Folder options for each sim you want to run. Then all you need to do is tick the appropriate box for the sim you want to run.

So every time he runs a different sim, he has to select a different folder? I don't see how that's any better than the current situation.
