Sad News, I met him a couple of times when he visited the Gt Cockcrow Railway with his family, although sadly confined to a wheelchair (the Ian Allan Group own the site of the miniature railway). As with many others his publishing kindled a lifetime interest with me in transportation, not just railways. I think I'm correct that he shared the same Birthday as myself, and would have been 94 tomorrow. Rest in Peace. I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. R I P Ian. Certainly one of the most influential people in the Transport Book publishing genre if not the most influential. The combined volume was a must when I was still at school

My mum (now 75) had an Ian Allan spotting book in the early/mid 1950s - I'm sure that helped the romance that led to my rail enthusiast dad to eventually marry her! And then produce me and pass on a passion for railways... In the 1970s, I eagerly awaited the annual publication of the 'Combined volume' of the ABC book. Joined British Rail in the early 80s for an enjoyable 14 year career in the industry. No longer on the railway - but still fascinated by the subject. A passion instilled in my parents and then me by Ian Allan. A massive influence on the transport publishing industry - a sad loss RIP Log in to reply |

As a young boy in the 1950's, the Ian Allan Combined Volumes were an absolute must. I remember that if you didn't have one, then you were treated almost like a leper. I had two copies at a time; one for carting around and the best copy left at home, neatly underlined and marked with cops, photos etc. Yes, the whole railway enthusiast fraternity owe Ian Allan a huge debt of gratitude, for making the hobby accessible and affordable.
