I have tried the search facility and it did not offer any hits,so forgive me if this has already been discussed but are plans in hand to bridge the gaps that exist in areas of the country.

Both the North West and North East of England lack coverage along with South Wales.

Do plans exist to remedy this?

Norman

Hi Norman,

Generally speaking Simsig doesn't usually announce what is in development, certainly not in the early to mid stages anyway.

A recent forum thread highlighted some sims that would be coming out shortly. Though South Wales, and the North West don't have any coverage on it.

Speaking as a sim developer, and someone who's now lived in South Wales for most of the last two years, I'd say it's quite a large project to take on. The conflict of interest with the South Wales Signalling Centre would have to carefully managed, though I see no reason the original Panel boxes can't be simulated.

There are always plans for most areas, however some plans have been sitting for years, people come and go, have other lives outside of SimSig, that kind of thing.

If you have or are able to get information for any of the areas that might be helpful!

I agree aswell. Reading needs re-doing now that the Refurbishment is almost over.

I have thought in the past that a large sim covering Port Talbot PSB plus Cardiff PSB and Newport PSB (before closures started to take effect) wouldn't be a bad idea: it would be rather fun IMO and, if Lydney was also included, could chain to both bristol and Gloucester.

Reading hasn't been released yet! When it is, it will cover the old layout.

That would probably be impossible to play! The three PSBs individually would be a good size, and you could chain them if you wanted.

Dave
Dave we've been through this before

As Steamer says the three together would be absolutely insane!

Newport PSB - Three Workstations
Cardiff PSB - Three Workstations
Port Talbot ASC - Three workstations (Possibly 2 I can't recall exactly)

Let's look at Cardiff Queen Street as a sample.

12 Trains from Cardiff Central through Queen Street and onwards up the Valleys every hour.
12 Trains from the Valleys through Queen Street to Cardiff Central every hour.
5 Trains each way an hour between Queen Street and "The Bay".

So Taff panel handles 34 trains an hour. Or just slightly over 1 train every 2 minutes.

For that reason alone it would be best split down into separate sims, which could be chained together.

But lets say for a second it was one large sim. What happens to Park Junction (Ebbw Valley Town branch), Barry, Aberthaw, Cowbridge Road (Vale of Glamorgan), Tondu (Maesteg branch), and Neath & Breacon Junction. Do you tag them on and create even more of a work load? Or do you leave them off as black holes?

Speaking also as a dev, this is how I'd split South Wales up...

2 Beginner-level sims:

"Vale of Glamorgan" - covering the black hole between Cogan Jn and Bridgend on the VoG line
"Valleys" - covering Radyr and the lines to Treherbert/Aberdare/Merthyr/Rhymney

2 Intermediate-level sims:
"Pembroke Coast" - covering all the little mechanical boxes West of Llanelli
"Port Talbot" - Port Talbot Panel, Tondu (Maesteg branch) and the Heart of Wales line

2 Advanced-level sims:
"Cardiff" - Cardiff Panel
"Newport" - Newport Panel, plus the Ebbw Vale branch

That would cover all of the South Wales mainline.

Now, I'm too busy with Slough/Reading and WTT work to even think about doing a Welsh sim at this moment in time. However, if the other developers haven't snaffled them all away I might consider one in the future...

I think the Valleys and Pembroke Coast need swapping in that list James.

24 trains an hour on the valleys. Just over a 100 a day past Llanelli.

The issue with any newer era layout is that there is usually less room for doing any historical Timetable wise, due to bits here and there being replaced, modified, etc

Valleys would be interesting, as you'd have two separate lines in the same simulation- the Rhymney and Taff lines join at Queen Street, which would be off simulation.

What does/did Taff panel control? Just Queen St or Queen St- Cardiff P6 &7- Ninian Park and Cogan?

Are the LCs between Cardiff and Bridgend CCTV from Cardiff/Port Talbot or from a gate box?

Taff panel controlled (Sort of still does) Cardiff Queen Street - Cardiff Central, plus the Cardiff Bay Branch. Cardiff Central Platform 6 + 7, out past Canton, the Penarth triangle, Ninian Park, Cogan Junction and the Penarth Branch.

The CCTV crossings are controlled by St Fagans Gate box. The AHBs are supervised by the panel.

Now that Salisbury and Southampton simulations exist and Reading will apparently appear shortly, a Basingstoke simulation (including Eastleigh) would join them neatly together and could include a link to the Portsmouth simulation. I know that nothing has been mentioned about it but I am trying to be hopeful.
