Does anyone know the purpose of the signals on the goods loop in this picture? The location is Melkridge sidings, between Haltwhistle and Bardon Mill. Unfortunately, I can only find pictures showing the back of them. There are 5 in total, plated A- E. The pattern of lamps on the front is reminiscent of this type of American signal.

Going by the description on the photo you linked and this photo, I would suspect they are (or were!) used to pass instructions to the driver when loading coal trains (forward, stop, etc.). Not too uncommon to have something similar at bulk loading/unloading facilities, and previously similar things appeared in hump yards.

As steamer says its a form of slow speed signalling found in hump yards and merry go round facilities. In this case it was probably related to a rapid loading facility as the caption mentions an opencast mine.

There were a load of these in Scunthorpe yard just to the east of the station - which I believe was a hump yard? Assume they have all been removed now - I'm going back 10 years since I last went through on a train to there.

At one time this siding had a coal loader ehich used coal from a couple of productive shallow pits in the area.The signals in question gave instructions to the driver. Going back to the 1980s. Log in to reply The following user said thank you: Steamer |
