I've seen mention on another forum of buffer stops that are linked to the signalling system such that if they are hit, a train can't be signalled to approach on adjacent lines. This is the first I've heard of them, do they exist, and if so, where are they installed?

Another thought occurred to me: Do the red lamps on buffer stops have to be proved lit before the signal in rear changes to yellow, as is the case when setting a route to anther signal?

Many locations have this. For instance at platform 4C at Birmingham New Street if anything happens with the buffers it will replace signals on the adjacent platform to danger.

I've also seen many instances of the red lamp having to be proved.

No, not traditionally, and I don't think even new schemes, however many have TPWS equipment which does have to be proved.

On Streatham Hill Reception road there is a treadle which, if triggered, will replace all the signals at Balham to danger.

This can also be done by putting in an insulated block joint followed by a track circuit interrupter. Occupation of the (tiny) track circuit immediately before the buffer stop then blocks other routes through normal flank locking mechanisms.

There is a Bufferstop Interrupter treadle at Battersea Park Platform 2, which would put signals on the Up/Down Brighton Slows back to danger if it is hit.
