Assuming they're not planning to disconnect every substation from the national grid and instead hook them up directly to a wind farm, does this mean anything at all? To me, it looks like they're simply choosing a renewable energy supplier to pay their bills to, and claiming that this means that all their electricity comes from wind farms - I can choose whatever supplier I want, but that won't change the source of the power that comes down my wires...

Where the actual electrons come from doesn't really matter, provided net contributions change. Interesting story. Further boosts the green credentials of the railway vs road. I imagine it might see some short term gains of traffic if the environment factors in to some company's decisions on whether to send their goods by road or rail. (I'm not an expert on this - but the prominence of the environment in larger companies' corporate aims suggests it might make a difference) Log in to reply |

FWIW, Metrolink has had a 100% renewable supply for quite some time. Again, it doesn't change where the power actually comes from but the funding is heading in the right direction.
