While I am aware about the lack of overlaps in New Street Station given the low line speed and 60's design I am curious as to whether anybody knows whether this is a legitimate move.

Route set from Platform 7A to the the Derby line via end of Platform 8A when a route has also been set from P8B to P8A.

It seems a bit close for comfort to me.

Depends on your definition of the word "legitimate"

Based on Google's "define:legitimate",

I'd say no on the first definition,

Yes on the second.

Allowed by the interlocking, but I would imagine it's frowned upon/forbidden to set such a combination of routes, much like setting routes into either end of a platform simultaneously.

That's pretty much it. I just checked the control tables to be sure and points 560 conditions to move reverse do not have any tests on 191 being set; conversely, routes from 191 do not mention points 560.

Incidentally, early resignalling plans barely alter New Street and still no overlaps, thus still very low linespeed. NR seem to think that adding even short overlaps and upping the linespeed a little would kill the station.

In the sim, those points seem to lock up and wait a time release if you bring something up to them on P8, whether they are sitting normal or reverse.

I don't have the sim handy at the moment to actually work through it, but from memory it seemed to be based on track circuit occupancy rather than a route being set.

This route is legitimate it is used to route trains to the up Derby from platform 7 it was added along with other extra routes by a scheme funded by the West Midlands passenger transport executive (WMPTE) in the 1970's
Incidentally platforms 1,2 &. 3 were also converted to bi-directional working. When te box was commissioned in 1965 platform 1,2 & 3 were signalled for train towards the London end of the station

Yes, though P7, not P8. Time of operation locking.
