That is not really the situation I am posing. What I am saying is when you put A > B into the National Rail site you may get reasonably direct options like A > X > B, A > Y > B or A > Z > B which will be governed by the National Rail connection times at X, Y or Z. However, what if A > London > B is actually quicker? What time is allowed for connection out of arriving train at London to departing train at London (whether at a single turn-round station of where you go from one London terminal to another) where the route is not suggested by National Rail? If we were travelling from for example South West to Scotland and Network Rail sent us via Cross Country when there was a potentially quicker route via Paddington/Euston should we try and find something from intermediate points for the same trains we would like to use (like maybe Reading to Watford Junction) to give transfer times - which leaves wide open the problem if a train is non-stop Exeter - Paddington then Euston - Preston leapfrogging the Cross- Country option on the way?
As long as you can show A > London > B is valid, you're okay - you can usually do that by picking certain stations on the route to test part of the change, or use the "Via" command to force it to take the required route (it's among the advanced options at the bottom).

Have to say my modus operandii was just to ensure the service ran and that the connection wasn't too short - I didn't check routes were valid in National Rail beforehand. I don't think it has to be quite that prescribed - as long as the service runs and you follow the connection rules.

EDIT: I'd go as far as to say that finding the "quicker" route is part of the game - I'd managed to get myself half an hour ahead of the previous leader by changing at Taunton rather than sitting on the rattler up to Cardiff. take your point that it might not be listed, though.

EDIT 2: Another one for the consecutive stations:

Watford High Street
Watford Junction
Watford North

MUCH more contentious

I am applying a rule that as long as each individual connection is valid on the national rail journey planner. I think this covers your scenario. So if ABC and BCD are valid then ABCD is valid.

If you put via London in the journey planer it will give you journeys via London, even where this involves two separate tickets. If you are really stuck I will allow the connection if you can show a valid connection from the arriving train to an earlier departure (to anywhere) or a connection from a later arrival to the specified departure.

The game is to find the best trains without being the Milk Tray man between stations. National Rail doesn't always give the best time between stations, but knowing how/where to spit the request if part of the fun!

But no intervening stations so its allowed. Pity about Westford West & Watford Stadium!

Originally started working from Danny252's route.

Queens Park (Glasgow) 1652 – Glasgow Central 1659 (SCT)
Glasgow Central 1730 – Milton Keynes Central 2148 (VT)
Milton Keynes Central 2159 – Watford Junction 2220 (VT)
Watford Junction 2227 – Harrow & Wealdstone 2233 (SR)
Harrow & Wealdstone 2242 – Queens Park (London) 2304 – London Waterloo 2326 (LUL Bakerloo)
London Waterloo 2352 – Queenstown Road 2359 – Clapham Junction 0002 (SWT)
Clapham Junction 0012 – London Victoria 0019 (SR)
London Victoria 0037 – Gillingham 0140 (SE)
Gillingham 0456 – Queenborough 0520 (SE)
Queenborough 0536 – Sittingbourne 0549 (SE)
Sittingbourne 0600 – Bromley South 0649 (SE)
Bromley South 0704 – Beckenham Junction 0709 (SE)
Beckenham Junction 0715 – Queens Road (Peckham) 0745 (SR)
Queens Road (Peckham) 0755 – London Bridge 0808 (SR)
London Bridge 0818 – London Paddington 0848 (LUL Jubilee and LUL Bakerloo)
London Paddington 0915 – Cardiff Central 1123 (GWR)
Cardiff Central 1156 – Quakers Yard 1238 (ATW)
Quakers Yard 1255 – Cardiff Central 1339 (ATW)
Cardiff Central 1400 – Bristol Temple Meads 1451 (GWR)
Bristol Temple Meads 1513 – Taunton 1544 (CC)
Taunton 1549 – Par 1821 (GWR)
Par 1829 – Quintrell Downs 1910 (GWR)

Total time: 26:18
The journey can start from Glasgow Queens Park later than this. If the 17:07 departure is taken, this arrives in Glasgow Central 17:16 which gives plenty of time to make the 17:30 to Euston, bringing the time down to 26:03

Unless you are going to/from the Low Level platforms that is probably overstated by about 10 minutes but that's the rules . . .

Exactly, otherwise I would have done so. I think my time is pretty good.

I thought it was Ryde Pier Head, Ryde Esplanade, and Ryde St Johns Road. That would count

Whilst I'm aware the correct answer has already been given, Question nine made me think of Imperial Wharf, which conjures images in my mind of a few TIE fighters and Imperial Shuttles parked up...

Many thanks, but the NationalRail website imposes a 15 minute connection time between National Rail and Underground services so I can't replicated your times.

I make your overall time 34hrs 09 min (21:32 on 11/1/16 to 07:41 on 13/1/16)

I can't beat that, although when I add in the recommended minimum connection times (available on brtimes.com), I noticed instead of being 2 hours ahead of schedule at Cardiff, instead I now get a layover at Euston of an hour.

Correct with the Rhaetian Railway. The Blaenavon listing mentions the "Primitive Railway" (now a cycle track) so I think that should also go on the list.
