When a route is set up from signal 3645 (approach on line A) to platform 1 point 5533 is called normal and locked. 5533 is the first point that diverges from line A to platform 4 (reverse) or platform 5 (normal). This prevents a route being set up to depart from platform 4 to line B.

Setting a route from platform 4 to line B requires point 5533 reverse so line A to P1 means P4 to line B cannot be set.

When a route is set up from signal 3645 to platform 2 point 5533 is called REVERSE and locked, thus allowing a route to be set up from platform 4 to line B.

In light of the latter, the former seems rather more restrictive than is necessary, surely?

The route to platform 1 does not lock any points. However, the points in question are all on the same track circuit. When a track circuit is occupied, any points within it, even if they won't actually be used by the train, are locked. In this case, 2H83 has occupied the track circuit, so you can't move the points until it clears.

The moral of that then is set the route out of P4 before any train inbound on line A to P1 passes 3645...
