Hi

Rumour has it the the Flying Scrapheap - sorry Flying Scotsman - made its first movements in steam on the night of 6th January 2016 on the East Lancs Railway.

I know I love steam locos but I wont be making special plansd to visit it as wherever it will be it will be packed.

It's hardly a rumour there's a lot of videos flying round about it.

Ive already bought my popcorn. All set to watch the armchair rivet counters argue over kylchap exausts, smoke deflectors, apple green, brunswick green, black etc. Also the many comments about everyone whos grandad fired, drove, or was an inspector on

According to the NYMR site they have sold out for the visit there.

People must be mad - they are charging either £36 or £38 for 1 round trip between Grosmont and Pickering - this didn't even include a rover for the rest of the day - you needed to buy another ticket. This is an 80-90% premium on the normal fare for a Grosmont to Pickering Day Rover.

No doubt the front desk staff at the NRM will be even keener to elicit more donations from poor tax payers who turn up thinking the museum is free. It's just a shame Jeremy Hoskins wasn't successful with his bid - it would probably have been running years ago and not been a drain on the museums funds.

Just looked at the couple of pictures on the MSN news page of the trial run. Some 5 or 6 idiots at the end of the opposite platform in the middle of the track or on it. These people are being ushered back onto the platform by a guard or similar.

I would have had the police arrest everyone of them as they are quite clearly trespassing and endangering their lives. Give them a hefty fine and see if they do it again.

If preserved railways got the Police involved every time someone walked onto the line then the motorists of Britain would be free from speeding fines, as the Police would do nothing else, and enthusiasts are by far and a way the worst for this kind of trespass with the added irritation that they think they are invincible because they know it all, but in reality know very little. I remember once working Hampton Loade box and having to almost split up a fight between lineside photographers about who got to a certain position first, only to be shocked when they both got moved on for standing somewhere stupid and not wearing any form of HV vest. About all you can do as a member of staff on a preserved railway is as this guy did, and usher them back onto the platform, or perhaps if you want a lot of hassle throw them off the station, but in my experience that's not worth the hassle.

As for Scotsman, whether people on here, or any other group of railway enthusiasts for that matter, like the engine concerned or not is irrelevant. It is bound to be a big news story that it is running under its own steam for the first time in years given the historical significance of the locomotive, and the high profile campaign a decade ago to purchase it for the nation after the previous owner went bust. With the amount of time and money spent on its complex restoration I would also seriously doubt it will be a "scrapheap" for reliability.

You can bring the job to a stop until they move on. But it doesn't make you popular!
