With the obvious exception of 1 screen simulations (e.g. Coventry) I was wondering whether the community think these should be provided on all other simulations.

While I appreciate there is the facility to scroll I find it easier to quickly move around using keystrokes. Not everybody has multiple monitors and even with 2 widescreen monitors I find that most larger simulations will not fit.

For example I can fit 50% of the recently released Edge Hill (Liverpool to Runcorn) on my 2 monitors and the provision of Hot Keys would allow me to quickly switch between the views with a minimal number of keystrokes.

Interested in views of both developers and users.

Like Andrew, I find Hot Keys an extremely useful feature of Simsig for sims that cover a large area. As an example, scrolling quickly from one end of KX to the other using the mouse wheel isn't really feasible and I often need to move from end to end when hosting.

For consistency, I believe Hot Keys should be made available on all sims that cover more than 1 or 2 screens.

By the way, I find it strange that 2 of the Rugby sims support Hot Keys, but Rugby North doesn't. Is this an oversight or intentional?

Different developer Lyn, so probably an issue of preference on their part.

I hope I didn't make too many mistakes in collecting this data - the current situation seems to be this (small-ish sims in italics):

Neither hot keys nor number keys:
Aston, Birmingham New Street, Chicago L, Coventry, Feltham, Fenchurch Street, Horsham, Huddersfield, Huyton, Lancing, Leamington Spa, Lime Street to Runcorn, Llangollen, Maidstone East, NE Wales, Oxted, Portsmouth, Stafford, Watford Jn, Wembley Suburban, Wolverhampton

Hot keys available, no number keys:
Brighton, LTS, Rugby North, Saltley*, Wimbledon

Number keys available, no hot keys:
Derby**, Liverpool Street, North Wales Coast, Shrewsbury, Westbury

Both number and hot keys available:
Exeter, King's Cross, Leeds E/W, LUL Victoria Line, Marylebone, Motherwell, Paisley, Rugby South, Rugby Centre, Salisbury, Swindon A & B, Victoria Central, Victoria South Eastern, Waterloo, Wembley Mainline, West Hampstead

* Saltley has number keys, but only 1 - 3, which is a bit coarse considering the size of the sim.
** Derby seems to use numbers 1 - 6 with Shift + QWERTY providing additional steps in between. I'm not sure what the history behind this is and whether the standard arrangement of keys, if necessary using the full complement of number keys from 1 to 0, plus letter keys corresponding to location names as on other sims might not be preferable?

Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

Thanks for your comments Jan & Stephen.

Have you got any preference?

P.S. Thanks also to Lyn who has expressed his preference.

I take it that by default everything else has both? Certainly it's my policy to do both and I think I have.

Personally I prefer number keys, there are too many sims to remember which letter goes to which area of which sim.

One sim I find slightly annoying is Kings Cross, as it does have number keys but they are set up with 1 as Kings Cross (at the far right), unlike most other sims where pressing 1 takes you to the far left.

Correct, everything else has both. I've amended my post though to make it more clear...

Peter
This would be a good standard/target state in my eyes.

It was first drawn with KGX on the Left.

And turned round long before Hot Keys were invented... :doh

Not quite James because you could use the numbers to switch between screens on paged sims.

It was just the natural progression from paged sims, to see your preferred view.
