Good for him, doubly so not being one of the idiots standing, of all places, actually on the running lines.

Quite! This clip is doing the rounds. Looks as if one of the engine's crew is telling the "enthusiasts" what he thinks of their trespassing!

That did make me wonder. Ok, so it probably has to be a Virgin Atlantic destination so at a guess that would be JFK, ATL, ORD, Dulles, LAX, LAS, maybe DFW. But that still doesn't stand out as an obvious train place... oh well, beggars can't be choosers!

Oi, I've been to Atlanta and it's not THAT bad! People are far more friendlier in the South then in the North, so kudos to the guy for getting a free trip there

I didn't say it was bad! Just that it's not exactly a top N train watching spot in the US.

I am sure that is St Neots - I only have 1 per cent of doubt because despite having lived there for 34 years, I have never seen the line from quite that perspective for some strange reason. That foot crossing is a menace and totally unnecessary as there is an underpass nearby.

The risk of someone being killed there was phenomenally high: from memory there are four trains due in the few minutes up to and including 08.46 and 6-7 in the 10 minute window. I suspect that people got lucky because some of the East Coast Services were late and that Flying Scotsman was late, although how the 08.38 / 39 departure to Kings Cross didn't hit anyone amazes me. I doubt very much any of them had looked at a timetable or something like Real Time Trains or they wouldn't have gone there in the first place. Maybe one did and the sheep followed. Visibility was not great on Thursday.

At least no-one was in shot that I recognise.

I had an almost identical experience, viewing Tornado at Drem in March 2009. It was running from Edinburgh to, I think, York. I thought that I could get a better shot from the down platform. Just as Tornado appeared, over my shoulder came a loud hoot from an East Coast HST. By the time it had passed, so had Tornado.

It's on YouTube:

Would East Coast have sent me to the USA? I doubt it!

Yes, it is. The signal on the right is the clue: the three signals are P304, P306, and P308, with the last being an intermediate signal for trains proceeding to Little Barford, going up the Down Slow. That means the video was taken just south of the 51 milepost (the signals are at 50m67c).

In fact, there's a bit of yellow visible at ground level which makes me think they've got on to the line at Love Lane (no.59) footpath crossing, at 50m71c (Google Maps calls the road leading to it on the Down side Marston Road).
