Firstly, my thanks to Geoff and the team for bringing us the York IECC set of simulations, we all thought it not possible, and it's really good to have them in SimSig.

A few questions, if I may...

1) I know about Network Rail's grading system, for example a lower graded signaller will be paid less than a higher grade (numbered from 1 - 10), however, the workload is also less in the lower grades.

Thus, would a trainee signaller brought to York be first let loose on something like the Ardsley workstation then the North West then York station and finally Leeds itself? Do signallers rotate round the different workstations or are they dedicated to one in particular, with relief signallers rotating round?

2) What sort of faults and failures are typical for such a large area such as York? I ask this so I can fine tune my failures in the options menu. As I am not a signaller, I don't know how many failures you would typically come across during a shift. I understand the real biggies such as an SSI failure or ARS failure are very rare indeed.

3) On the North West sim (my favourite) the ARS is very slow to release a route across Dockfield Jnc, into and out of Shipley, leaving it right until the last minute, even bringing a train from Leeds down to a red before releasing. Is that prototypical?

In response to your questions...

1) You learn the panels you are employed for, so if you get employed as a Grade 8 signaller working the Leeds workstation then that is what you will learn, even if there are lower grade panels in the box.

2) I work as an incident controller for Kent and can safely say that there are so many factors involved eg age of equipment, location, amount of useage, temperatures, that it is very difficult to define what fails the most. As a general rule of thumb I would say locations where the points are hardly used has a lower risk of points failures than track circuit failures.

3) I will look into that, I believe it is prototypical in order to prevent ARS routing trains from Shipley in the wrong order.
