Hi! I have a question: On the web of a rail is every few meters some text. It tells from which manufacturer it comes, sometimes in which year it was produced and also the original rail profile. How do you call this in English? Do have a name for it? In German it is called "Walzzeichen". Best regards, Christoph Log in to reply |

I know what you mean but I don't know of a name for it. Best I can think of is "maker marker" or "manufacturer marker".

In the US it seems to be called "branding" - I haven't been able to dig up anything from the UK, though.

Thank you for all your answers. I have an additional question. In another internet forum I found the following picture. According to the author it was taken in the year 2006. The rail is part of an closed (1988) railway line in lower austria.  It looks as if the rail had been manufactured in the UK. Do you know this manufacturer? Can you provide additional information? According to this link from a source that has been known to sometimes have a passing acquaintanceship with the facts, the British steel industry was subsumed in the nationalised British Steel Corporation between 1967 and 1988 so it is likely that the rail shown was a product of the that corporation.
