What is Groundhog day? 10/01/2018 at 19:49 #104954

Good afternoon!

I recently bought Newport, and I got a little bit courious about the Groundhog scenario. I googled it, and the only thing I found was "Groundhound Day", a tradition celebrated on February 2nd in USA and Canada. I searched SimSig's website, and Newport is not the only simulation with a Groundhog day scenario. Peak Disctrict and Peterborough both have a Groundhog day scenario; Maybe even more simulations.

What exactly is Groundhog day, and how will it affect the traffic?

Thank you!

Stig

I assume you mean timetable, not scenario?

There's a long-standing project to equip each simulation with a timetable for 15/10/2009. The date isn't significant, as far as I know it was just picked as a typical Thursday.

The 'Groundhog Day' name is a reference to the film of the same name, in which the main character lives the same day repeatedly until he resolves to be a better person (or something). Of course, as those timetables are played so often, on so many simulations (in part because they're usually the only ones which chain), the set has been given the name 'Groundhog Day'.

A second set, for 08/04/2015, is starting to be produced as well.

Thank you, Steamer, for a great answer! Yes, I meant timetable, not scenario.
At first I thought it was a holiday celebrated in UK as well, and was a bit worried there would be less trains running (Because of holidays).

Again, thank you!

And the film was named after an old tradition in the USA where the appearance or otherwise of a groundhog on a particular day (allegedly) signified whether spring would come early or not.
