After the latest update to Manchester Piccadilly, saved files will not load. Re-downloaded system files but still will not load. No problems with other sims.
Is there anyway I can re-download Manchester Piccadilly without having to buy another copy?

Following issues reported elsewhere - is the language of your PC set to something other than English? There have been some internationalisation issues in the latest loader update.

If you could post a copy of your save game I will have a look if I can recover it for you.

It's not related to a specific simulation, but is a core code issue if you're computer language saves certain types of numbers with a "," instead of a ".".

Buying a sim has no bearing whatsoever on whether you can download a simulation or not, as they are all available to try before you buy. Simply delete the relevant files from your computer the update feature will offer you the option to redownload.

Although I am in France, my computer runs in English. Not had this problem before with any of the sims. Regarding another download, thought maybe original copy of Manchester Piccadilly had become corrupted. Copy of saved file attached.

Hi Lazlo,

Firstly I've fixed the file, so you'll be able to load it up again! You'll receive a warning "This save file has been edited outside of simSig. SimSig will try to load it anyway", but it does run fine.

The exact issue is language or regional settings which use "," instead of a "." as a decimal place in a number, most European countries use "," I've noticed, and your computer is likely set as such if it's in France. Not to worry the team will have a fixed core code out as soon as they can.

Well, I would, if I could work out why setting the decimal separator to a full stop immediately before saving anything for this exact issue a very long time ago, and not touching that code for years, then it no longer appearing to work then I would do an update! So while I've certainly looked at it yesterday with some urgency, I have yet to come up with a "why" - though I do have a solution.

Downloaded the corrected file but still will not load. I then deleted Man Picc and re-installed after restarting my computer but still will not load the saved file. Seems odd as the other sim's saved files load ok.

What happens when you tried to load the fixed file? It worked for me when I initially modified the file, but now I can't get it to work either.

Hello Lazlo,

I reported the same problem on Thursday here post.
It affects all sims when you save a file after the loader 4.6.9 upgrade. Files saved before the upgrade can be loaded.

I'm also in France and my computer runs in French. You say your computer runs in English, but do you have decimal commas ?

Headshot, the programme tries to load but then doesn't respond. I agree with grahamj42, it was working ok until the last update. By decimal commas, do you mean the saved file ends with .ssg (dot ssg)? This problem only seems to affect only Manchester Piccadilly.

Decimal numbers are saving as 1,23 instead of 1.23 despite the Loader disabling localisation. We're still trying to work out why the setting is now being ignored.

Found what I believe to be the cause, anecdotally confirmed by Google searches. When SimSig tries to write the XML into the save file, the values therein are variants. Deep in the Delphi core libraries it tries a variant to string conversion, which calls Oleaut32.dll. It is in this DLL that the localisation settings appear to have changed, in that it ignores anything previously set up (ie we set the decimal separator to '.' to override any localisations). Oleaut32.dll is a Windows DLL that is subject to Windows updates. Yet older loaders don't exhibit the same behaviour, but I may try to rebuild an older exe to be certain.

TL;DR - something external to SimSig appears to have changed, causing these problems.

Geoff,

Thanks very much for looking at this. I had a copy of the 4.6.0 loader on my PC which still saves OK.

My oleaut32.dll is dated 17/04/2017, so I don't think it's a direct change there.

Are you now using a US version of Windows to compile, rather than a European one ?

I have a nasty feeling that the answer is going to be to write our own real-to-string function. Since we never have more than about 6 or 7 significant digits, this can be more lightweight than the system "must be as precise as possible" function.

Well, I do, but have done so for the last 5 years. I'm still confused as to why older Loaders work when the section that saves hasn't changed for a long time. Hence the external forces.

Ultimately Clive is likely right.

May be some Windows version issues arising (or maybe just different files for 32-bit/64-bit OS). oleaut32.dll in my C:\Windows\System32 is version 10.0.16299.15, size 775kB, modified 29/09/17 14:41, language English (United States). I have the same file name and version number in C:\Windows\SysWOW64 timed at 14:42 on the same date but size 579kB.

System is running fully updated 64-bit Windows 10; the modified date/times may actually be the date my Windows did the last major update.

SimSig is compiled for 32-bit, so it will use the version in System32, not SysWOW64.

Simsig will use the one in the SysWOW64 folder, as it is the system folder for 32bit files

On 64bit systems
Folder name Bitness Description
System32 64 Windows System folder (system directory) for 64-bit files
SysWOW64 32 Windows System folder (system directory) for 32-bit files
Program Files 64 Folder for 64-bit program files
Program Files (x86) 32 Folder for 32-bit program files

This can be somewhat confusing, but the System32 folder is intended for 64-bit files and the SysWOW64 folder is intended for 32-bit files. This may seem a bit illogical if you look at the folder names, but there is an explanation to this. It has to do with compatibility. Many developers have hard coded the path to the system folder in their applications source code. They have included "System32" in the folder path. And to preserve compatibility, if the application is converted to 64-bit code, the 64-bit system folder is still named System32.

But what about 32-bit applications that have the system path hard coded and is running in a 64-bit Windows? How can they find the new SysWOW64 folder without changes in the program code, you might think. The answer is that the emulator redirects calls to System32 folder to the SysWOW64 folder transparently so even if the folder is hard coded to the System32 folder (like C:\Windows\System32), the emulator will make sure that the SysWOW64 folder is used instead. So same source code, that contains a path with the System32 folder included, can be compiled to both 32-bit and 64-bit program code without any changes.

If anyone has a corrupt save file they’d rather not lose, rescuing it seems quite straightforward: open the SSG file in a ZIP program, get SavedSimulation.xml out of it, open that file in a text editor, search for commas, change the ones in the middle of numbers to periods, and then pack SavedSimulation.xml back into a new ZIP file (with a .SSG) extension. SimSig will note that the checksum is wrong and therefore the save must have been edited externally (as of course it has), but will try to load it anyway. This information might be useful for the time being until a new version is released. If the authors decide not to fix the problem by never generating commas in save files but not by accepting commas when loading, this information might continue to be useful even after the fix is released in order to rescue specific save files that were made with the bad versions.
