TRUST IDs - the missing link 13/08/2018 at 16:23 #110997

I remember reading about this somewhere on the internet a couple of months ago, but I can't find it again for the life of me. I don't think if was on the Simsig forum, as I've done numerous searches on likely terms that would bring it up, and nothing ...

Anyway, 10-character TRUST IDs. I know what eight of the characters are, but I don't know about the remaining two.

I know the first two numbers are the first two digits of the STANNOX code of the origin station, I know the standard headcode comes next, and I know that the last two digits represent the day of the month on which the train is running. It's characters seven and eight I'm having trouble identifying.

For example, today's 05.53 Plymouth to Paddington's TRUST ID is "841A72M513". The troublesome characters are the "M5". I think I remember reading that it has something to do with timing intervals or similar. Did I imagine that, or am I on the right lines?

I'm sure a few people here are in the know, and would be able to fill me in (hopefully comprehensively) on the meaning of the mysterious missing link. Thanks.

That was the thread!

Funny how my searches didn't bring it up, either on here or Google. Oh well, thanks anyway.

Passenger trains are 'Mandatory' trains, hence the 'M' as the 7th character in the 10-character TOPS Train ID (not TRUST ID). TRUST is merely a train reporting system which works off the back of TOPS, TOPS will work if TRUST is down, but not the other way around. WTT freight trains are 'Conditional', hence the 'C' in the Train ID. I'm trawling way back into my memory now, but IIRC the 8th character was used to differentiate between individual trains where otherwise more than one train would have the same Train ID, as can often happen with passenger services. This rarely happened with freights, so invariably the 8th character would be a semicolon (;), known in TOPS as a 'skip' as it was used/entered to 'skip' fields that did not require populating when making a TOPS input, but the fields still needed to be recognised as fields.
